Separate a purchase problem from a travel problem
The community Pylons reference describes different conditions for vendor stock and for teleportation. Having a pylon in inventory does not prove its destination is valid; two correctly placed and working endpoints are needed for the usual town-to-town trip. The Universal Pylon is an exception to ordinary resident and biome checks. The Aether Pylon is made with Shimmer and has its own Shimmer-area rule; neither is the focus of this ordinary purchased-biome-pylon plan.
For ordinary biome pylons, the indexed reference says the source and destination each need two or more qualifying housed NPCs, with the home and NPC position both relevant. Its history describes an earlier desktop 1.4.1 proximity fix, so do not assume very old builds behave identically. A visitor merely walking past a pylon is not the same evidence as an assigned home. Use the housing query and observed status message to identify the actual endpoint that fails.
| Stage | Evidence to inspect | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Buying | Vendor, player biome, nearby NPCs and installed version | An old happiness guide fits every build |
| Source | Nearby placed pylon, local assigned residents and biome | The far end is the only possible problem |
| Destination | Matching biome and its own qualifying homes | Residents at the source satisfy both ends |
| Map | Map enabled and intended destination selected | Owning a pylon is the same as selecting it on the map |

Use the error to choose one endpoint
If the message points to the current pylon, check the local housing assignments first. If it points to the destination, inspect those homes instead. The reference says qualifying NPCs must have their home within a pylon-centered area and also be near their own home; the presence of two home flags alone does not prove both NPCs are currently eligible.
If the message says the biome is wrong, inspect the pylon's actual location and world conditions rather than moving unrelated homes. If the player is not close enough, walk to the source pylon. Do not mistake the NPC's preferred biome for the pylon's placement requirement.
| Observed message or symptom | First check | One controlled change |
|---|---|---|
| Not enough villagers at current pylon | Local home assignments and the residents' positions | Restore or reassign an eligible local home |
| Not enough villagers at destination | The destination's homes and residents | Correct that endpoint, not the source |
| Wrong biome | Biome detected at the pylon | Place the correct type in its matching biome |
| Too far from a pylon | Player position relative to the source | Move close and retry the map |
| No map interaction | Map enabled in settings | Enable the map and select a placed target |
| Ancient forces prevent access | Pylon location behind unsafe Lihzahrd Brick Walls below the surface and Plantera progress | Check the actual location and progression rather than rearranging unrelated residents |

Worked example: one missing destination resident
Illustrative setup, not a tested world: a Forest Pylon has two qualifying residents near their homes, and a Snow Pylon is in its matching biome but has only one qualifying resident. Trying Forest → Snow identifies the destination as short; moving a third person into the Forest group does not satisfy the Snow endpoint.
After arranging another valid resident at the Snow end, recheck actual housing and the status message, then test the return direction as well. This is a fault-isolation example, not a promise that a newly assigned NPC will immediately move into place. Both endpoints and player position must still satisfy their other conditions.
| Endpoint | Illustrative qualifying residents | Diagnostic outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Forest source | 2 | Resident count passes in the example |
| Snow destination | 1 | One short of the ordinary two-resident condition |
| Snow after a second eligible resident | 2 | Count passes only if homes, positions and biome also qualify |

Check the installed version before copying an old shopping layout
The indexed desktop 1.4.5.0 change list says the minimum happiness threshold for pylon sales was removed. Older layouts that depend on a particular price discount may therefore answer an old-version question rather than the current one. Happiness still has other uses, and the change does not remove every vendor or vicinity condition. The same release notes allow pylon use during boss fights and invasions, whereas older builds restricted it; verify your platform's actual build and message.
The indexed Pylons article describes another nearby NPC for an ordinary vendor, while the indexed 1.4.5.0 change list phrases the nearby requirement as two other villagers. These descriptions are not identical; without an actual test here, do not treat either as a proven minimum for your build. If the item is missing, verify the vendor, biome and nearby residents; checking with additional eligible neighbors is a practical diagnostic, not a guarantee. Some vendors do not sell ordinary pylons.
- Record the edition and displayed version, and identify the exact ordinary pylon you want.
- Inspect a suitable resident vendor's actual shop in the desired player biome and confirm nearby NPCs.
- If the pylon is absent, check vendor eligibility and residents before changing the whole town.
- After obtaining two different appropriate biome pylons, place each in its matching biome.
- Use housing query and player position to verify both endpoints; enable the map and test one direction.
- Record the actual message and test the reverse direction after any correction.

Record the observation, not a guessed fix
A pylon's status may change if a resident moves, dies, wanders too far from home, or the surrounding biome changes. Record the version, exact error, source and target positions, type, housing and NPC state before and after one change. This guide does not claim an in-game test or a universally working layout.

Before you play
- Identify whether the problem is purchase, placement or teleportation.
- Check source and destination housing separately.
- Confirm both ordinary pylons are in their matching biomes and the player is near the source.
- Enable the map and read the actual message.
- Check version-specific shop rules rather than copying an old happiness threshold.
Frequently asked questions
Do two NPCs at the source make the destination work?
No. The cited ordinary-pylon rule also checks qualifying residents at the destination; the Universal Pylon is an exception.
Does every nearby NPC count automatically?
No. The reference considers the assigned home and the NPC's distance from it; use the housing query and actual status message.
Must I meet the old happiness discount to buy a pylon on 1.4.5?
The indexed desktop 1.4.5.0 notes say the minimum happiness requirement was removed. Vendor, biome and NPC proximity still matter, and other versions can differ.
Can I place two Forest Pylons in the same world?
The cited reference says only one pylon of each type may be placed in a world.
