Ask the game which dependency is missing

The Guide NPC's crafting option can reveal recipes that use a material. Treat it as a local reference when an item name or Wiki page is ambiguous. A recipe typically has at least two gates: the required ingredients and the correct crafting station or environment.

Crafting-menu arrangement differs across platforms and may change across updates; the Wiki's Crafting 101 page explicitly says some UI details need revision. The stable question is whether the material, station and position are all satisfied in your installed game.

  1. Carry one relevant ingredient to the Guide NPC and inspect what it can make.
  2. Record the recipe's required materials and station or environment.
  3. Put those ingredients in your inventory; place the station in the world rather than leaving it as an item.
  4. Stand near the station and re-open the crafting list. Change only one missing condition at a time.

Diagnose by the first missing gate

Do not add every crafting station to one pile because a single recipe is absent. First ask whether its ingredient is actually in your inventory; then whether the listed station is placed; finally whether your character is close enough to use it.

If the Guide shows no recipe for the item you tried, check whether you gave him an ingredient rather than a finished output. Some outputs also require progression or special environments outside a simple work-bench setup. Record that boundary instead of inventing a missing station.

Worked example without inventing a recipe

Suppose the Guide lists a recipe requiring a work bench, and you have the ingredient but the output is missing from the crafting list. A work bench in a chest is not a nearby station. Place it, move your character next to it and inspect the list again. That verifies one missing gate without claiming a particular patch's UI sequence.

If the recipe still does not appear, compare every material quantity shown by the Guide with the inventory you are carrying. A screenshot of the Guide recipe and your open inventory is more useful than the question 'why can I not craft this?' alone.

Keep the source and your observation separate

A Wiki recipe is a reference, not proof that your modded or different-edition save uses the same ingredients. Log the installed version, platform, item name, Guide's displayed requirement and what changed after moving closer or adding a station.

This procedure is intentionally small: it helps locate the first missing condition. It does not claim to replace a complete item database or to have tested every recipe.

Frequently asked questions

Is carrying a work bench enough?

No. The cited station reference describes recipes becoming available when you are near a placed station.

Why does a Wiki screenshot not match my menu?

Platform and version interfaces differ; even the cited Crafting 101 page warns that its menu description may need revision. Use your installed recipe display as the final UI reference.

Does this list every recipe?

No. It gives a method for finding the missing gate for the specific item in front of you.
