Start with the complete chain
Four Wood covers only the final Furnace craft. Starting from loose materials also requires its intermediate bench and Torches. Decide which of those already exist: ignoring their cost creates a shortfall, while counting them twice wastes gathering time.
This ledger deliberately uses ordinary Wood, plain Stone Blocks and standard Gel. Found Torches can replace the craft, but a Torch already on your house wall is not simultaneously a carried Furnace ingredient.

Worked failure: 14 Wood is one short
Illustrative inventory: 14 Wood, 20 Stone Blocks, 1 Gel and 10 Copper Ore, with no existing stations or Torches. The bench consumes ten Wood; the Torch batch consumes one more. Three remains. The Furnace therefore lacks one Wood, even though its Stone and Torches are ready.
Collect one Wood, not more Stone or an unrelated station. After crafting and placing the Furnace, three Copper Bar crafts consume nine of the ten ore. The predicted end state is a placed bench and Furnace, three bars and one ore. This is recipe arithmetic, not a witnessed gameplay result. All three Torches were consumed, so this example leaves no house light.

Check every transition in the game
The Guide's recipe display identifies requirements; it does not prove your character can craft at its current position. Check that the named output becomes available at the correct station and that it appears after the craft.
This is a diagnosis chain, not an optimal armor route. Three bars does not promise you can afford a particular tool. Check that next recipe separately.
- Carry the full starting budget, or just the missing inputs if you already own intermediate items. Keep inputs in your inventory to eliminate storage access as a variable.
- Craft the Work Bench by hand and place it on a clear surface. Make the three standard Torches by hand.
- Stand beside the bench carrying 20 Stone Blocks, 4 Wood and 3 Torches. Craft one Furnace; expect those ingredients to be consumed and one Furnace item to appear.
- Place the Furnace on clear ground. Stand beside it carrying Copper Ore; expect the Copper Bar recipe when at least three ore remains.
- Craft one bar three times from ten ore. Check for three bars and one ore; stop below the three-ore cost.
- If a step fails, inspect its in-game recipe and your exact build. Completing the bench alone does not validate the entire chain.

Match the remedy to the failed output
Offer Wood or Stone to the Guide to inspect Furnace requirements, and Copper Ore for the bar. Compare quantities with the actual carried stack. Naming the failed output is more useful than filling a room with stations.
If your recipe differs, record the build and mods before applying this ledger. Tin is not the Copper input used here, even though many worlds generate it instead.

Subtract existing stock, but reserve the house light
A reusable bench and three carried Torches leave only four Wood to gather for the Furnace. A bench without Torches needs five Wood plus one Gel. Starting with neither needs fifteen Wood plus one Gel. Every option still needs twenty Stone Blocks.
To keep a housing light when starting without Torches, craft two batches: two Wood and two Gel make six Torches. Spend three on the Furnace, keep three, and place one in the house. With a new bench, this alternate plan costs sixteen Wood. The extra Torch batch is a deliberate addition, not a leftover in the fifteen-Wood plan.

Frequently asked questions
Why am I one Wood short starting with 14?
Ten goes into the bench and one into Torches, leaving three. The Furnace needs four: gather one more.
Why does 10 Copper Ore not make 10 bars?
Three ore is required per bar. Ten supports three complete crafts, using nine and leaving one.
