Distinguish health capacity from local regeneration
The indexed Life Crystal reference says a new character starts at 100 maximum health and each used Life Crystal adds 20, for up to 15 crystals and 400 maximum health from crystals. Existing temporary bonuses can make the number shown during play harder to compare; use your unbuffed capacity and game version for this budget.
The Heart Lantern is a different use of that item: the indexed recipe combines one Life Crystal and four Chains. When placed, it grants a health-regeneration buff to players nearby. It does not permanently increase their maximum health. A lantern's exact coverage differs by version, and regeneration is not a guarantee against a boss's next hit.
| Choice | Life Crystal cost | What changes | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use the crystal | 1 | One character gains 20 permanent maximum health | Cannot use more once the crystal-based maximum is reached |
| Craft and place a Heart Lantern | 1 plus 4 Chains | Nearby players can receive a regeneration buff | Requires placement and proximity; not a permanent health increase |
| Keep it for another player | 1 reserved | Another character can decide how to use it | No effect until that player uses or crafts it |

A three-crystal budget exposes the tradeoff
Illustrative case: a new, unbuffed character has 100 maximum health and finds exactly three Life Crystals. Using all three gives 160 maximum health: 100 + 3 × 20. Alternatively, using two gives 140 maximum health and leaves one crystal for a Heart Lantern, provided four Chains are also available. Neither result is a recorded save or a guarantee of winning a fight.
The second option spends the last crystal on a shared local benefit instead of the third personal 20-health increase. It may suit a group that repeatedly fights in one area; a solo player leaving that area may prefer the permanent capacity. Decide based on the actual party and arena, not an assumed universal best choice.
| Allocation from 3 crystals | Personal max health | Lantern crafted? | Extra input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use all 3 | 160 | No | None for crystal use |
| Use 2; reserve 1 for lantern | 140 | Only after crafting and placement | 4 Chains |
| Use 1; keep 2 | 120 | No | Two crystals remain for later decisions |

Find and collect a crystal without assuming a fixed location
The community reference describes Life Crystals as uncommon objects in the Underground layer and below, with exceptions including the Dungeon and Underworld. Treat this as an exploration direction, not a coordinate or a promise that a particular cave contains one. The Wiki's version history says modern desktop crystals are harvested with a pickaxe; check the displayed tool and item in your build.
Plan a safe return and avoid entering an unexplored hazard just because a crystal is visible. In multiplayer, agree who is using or keeping each one before spending the shared find. A crystal held in inventory is not the same as a maximum-health increase until the intended player actually uses it.
- Record the player's unbuffed maximum health and the number of crystals held.
- Explore an accessible Underground area with a safe exit and suitable tools.
- Check the collected item is a Life Crystal rather than a temporary Heart pickup.
- If choosing personal health, use the crystal and verify that character's maximum increased.
- If choosing the lantern instead, reserve one crystal and four Chains for its recipe.

Place and verify the lantern before relying on it
The cited recipe produces a Heart Lantern from one Life Crystal and four Chains by hand. If Chains are missing, check your installed crafting menu and the appropriate anvil. The indexed Chain page documents an Iron or Lead Anvil route, but historical output counts differ by version; do not assume a particular batch size without reading the game.
After crafting, place the lantern on a valid support near the intended fighting area and inspect the buff indicator from the spots where players will stand. Coverage is not infinite; a player outside it will not receive that nearby effect. The reference also says wiring can toggle its light without removing the buff, so a dark appearance alone is not a reliable test of regeneration.
| Problem | Inspect | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Lantern recipe absent | One Life Crystal, four Chains and installed recipe | Obtain missing Chains and recheck the crafting list |
| Lantern cannot be placed | Valid overhead support and clear space | Try a valid support rather than consuming another crystal |
| No Heart Lamp buff at fight position | Placement and distance on the current version | Move to a supported spot near the lantern and check again |
| Health cap did not rise after crafting | A crafted lantern versus a consumed crystal | Use a separate crystal if personal maximum health is the goal |

Recheck the goal after reaching the crystal cap
The indexed Life Crystal reference limits normal crystal-based maximum health to 400. Extra crystals cannot raise it further and can be saved for another player or another documented use. The same reference describes Life Fruit as a later route to additional capacity after Hardmode; that route is not equivalent to another early Life Crystal.
Maximum-health milestones can affect other game events. Check the current world's conditions and boss readiness when increasing health; this guide does not infer a guaranteed natural boss spawn from the crystal count. Record version, unbuffed capacity and actual buff state to make any discrepancy reproducible.

Before you play
- Count Life Crystals by player and note unbuffed maximum health.
- Compare the permanent 20-health gain with the lantern's local regeneration.
- Reserve four Chains if crafting a lantern.
- Verify the placed buff at the intended fight location.
- Check the crystal cap and version before expecting another permanent increase.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Heart Lantern permanently raise maximum health?
No. It provides a nearby regeneration buff when placed; using a separate Life Crystal is the source-described permanent +20 capacity.
How many Life Crystals raise a new character from 100 to 160 health?
Three, assuming the ordinary +20 per use and no temporary maximum-health modifier.
Can I use a Life Crystal after reaching 400 maximum health from crystals?
The cited community reference says no further Life Crystal is consumed to raise the cap at that point. Life Fruit is a later, separate mechanic.
Does the lantern guarantee a boss clear?
No. The buff is local and the outcome also depends on damage, movement and other conditions.
