Do not confuse research accumulation with unlock cost
The 1.1.0 official notes say the legacy system was replaced by a board: research generates Tech Points, while each technology costs one Tech Point to unlock. The amount of research required for each new Tech Point increases, so long-term plans should not assume a constant research-to-point rate.
- Confirm the save is on Surviving Mars: Relaunched and note its patch version.
- Write down the target technology and the current researched nodes visible on the board.
- Treat current research as progress toward the next Tech Point, not a direct percentage toward an arbitrary technology.
- Count the adjacency path from an already researched node and list intermediate technologies you are willing to unlock.
- Check whether an Initiative goal is needed to open a separate entry point to the board.

Check route legality before you spend
The official notes describe a spatial hex board and adjacency-limited spending. They also distinguish Breakthrough and Mystery/Story technologies, which are discovered separately from the main board. A route plan should therefore distinguish what is already visible and legal from what is only hoped for.
- Mark researched nodes and any open Initiative entry points from the live board.
- Draw a connected hex route to the target using only currently visible nodes.
- Count one Tech Point per planned technology and keep the rising research requirement for future points in mind.
- Keep breakthrough/mystery discoveries outside the main path unless the current UI shows a specific link.
- Spend one point at a time and recheck adjacency and board state after each unlock.
| Target type or state | What the 1.1.0 notes establish | Planning response |
|---|---|---|
| Visible main-board technology adjacent to researched node | One Tech Point can be spent on an adjacent technology | Confirm it is the intended unlock before spending |
| Visible target separated by unresearch nodes | Cannot spend directly unless adjacent to a researched node | List a connected path and its intermediate costs |
| Wonder technology far from origin | Notes say sustained, focused commitment is needed | Compare route depth with the colony's current priorities |
| Breakthrough or Mystery/Story technology | Discovered separately, outside the main grid path | Do not count it as a normal adjacent board node |
| Initiative entry point | Unlocked by completing certain goals | Verify the Initiative goal in the current board before planning through it |

Make the route fit the colony, not a tier list
The new board allows different paths but the source does not establish a single best route for every sponsor, map, threat or colony. A local aid can expose route length and unknown assumptions; it cannot know which technology your settlement needs or whether a hidden discovery appears.
- State the colony problem the target is meant to solve: survival, logistics, production or a longer-term Wonder.
- Compare the route's intermediate unlocks with immediate needs instead of ranking technologies in isolation.
- Leave discoveries that are not yet visible marked as unknown, not assumed nodes.
- If your board differs, use the current screen and newer official patch notes over a prewritten route or community post.

Before you play
- Relaunched edition and patch recorded.
- Target technology and current researched nodes listed.
- Every planned next node checked for adjacency.
- One Tech Point per technology budgeted separately from rising research requirements.
- Initiatives and separate Breakthrough/Mystery technologies treated as distinct mechanics.
- No route described as optimal without a colony-specific reason.
Frequently asked questions
Do technologies cost more Tech Points deeper in the board?
The 1.1.0 notes say every technology costs one Tech Point; the escalating part is the research required to generate each subsequent point.
Can I spend a point on any visible technology?
The official notes say spending is limited to technologies adjacent to already researched nodes.
Are Breakthrough and Mystery technologies normal grid nodes?
The notes say they are discovered separately and are not bound to the main research grid.
