Use the correct edition and patch first
The official patch notes identify a redesigned service system for Surviving Mars: Relaunched in version 1.1.0. They explain that service effects apply across the dome without colonists needing to physically visit the service building for its stat effect. This is not a safe assumption for legacy Surviving Mars or a different patch; the official feed also contains later 1.1.1 fixes.
- Confirm the title is Surviving Mars: Relaunched, not the legacy game.
- Record the installed game version and whether the dome/save has mods.
- If on a later patch, scan its official notes for changes to service capacity, shifts or population eligibility before using the 1.1.0 numbers.
- Identify the service stat and colonist group you are trying to improve.

Pool capacity by service type
The developer diary says same-type services combine into one dome-wide pool, and the stat benefit is reduced proportionally when capacity is less than dome population. Its example uses a 40-adult dome with an Electronics Store at 8 capacity per shift over two shifts and a Small Art Store at 3 capacity over three shifts; the stated example is meant to illustrate per-type aggregation. Count only services that apply to the target group, and use the game UI as the final eligibility check.
- Read dome population and separate adults, children or any other groups relevant to the chosen service.
- For each building, record service type, per-shift capacity, number of open shifts and any stated group restriction.
- Add capacity only within the same service type; do not combine unlike services into one total.
- Compare the pooled capacity for the selected type with the applicable dome population.
- If capacity is short, decide whether opening a shift or adding a building is the lower-cost adjustment; recheck the stat after the in-game update.
| Check result | Interpretation in the 1.1.0 source | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Same-type capacity at/above eligible population | Capacity is not the obvious shortfall | Check service type, target group, disabled shift or other colony factors |
| Same-type capacity below eligible population | Patch says stat gain is reduced proportionally | Compare one additional shift/building and recheck |
| Service type mismatches desired stat | Capacity in another category does not answer this need | Select a building whose service type affects the target stat |
| Only children/adults are eligible | Total dome headcount may not be the relevant denominator | Compare the group for that service; verify current UI |

Separate capacity from active shifts and other causes
The 1.1.0 notes state that a shift change does not interrupt visits unless no shifts remain active or the building is turned off. Because later updates can adjust behavior, use that only as a dated source rule and verify the current status indicator.
- Check whether the service building is operational and at least one intended shift is active.
- Look for a zero-capacity or disabled-building condition before adding more service buildings.
- Check that the building type's service applies to the colonist group and stat you care about.
- Change one shift or building, wait for the UI to refresh, and compare the same stat.
- If still unclear, record build, service, capacity, shifts and dome population for support; do not present a calculation as a save-tested result.

Frequently asked questions
Do colonists have to enter a service building for its stat effect in Relaunched 1.1.0?
The official Services & Science notes say service effects apply to all colonists in the dome without a visit being required. Verify later patch notes for changes.
Can I add restaurant and art-store capacities together?
No. The official developer diary describes pooling by service type, so compare capacity within the relevant type.
Does this apply to the original Surviving Mars?
This guide is specifically about the Relaunched 1.1.0 redesign. Do not transfer it to legacy Surviving Mars.
