Separate a cold-room target from actual frozen food
A cooler's target is the temperature it tries to reach, not a guarantee that the room is already there. The community cooler reference lists a default of 21°C, comfortable for a room but not a freezer. Select the machine and reduce its target a few degrees below 0°C; then move the pointer into the food room and check the displayed temperature over time, especially after doors open or outside heat rises.
The food and temperature references distinguish spoilage from outdoor deterioration: freezing stops the spoilage clock for perishable food, but unroofed items can still lose hit points. Use the item inspection to see the actual storage state, and confirm the food is inside the intended room, not merely in a nearby stockpile. A target of -5°C (23°F) is an example buffer, not a guarantee that the room will hold it through a heat wave.
- Select the powered wall cooler and inspect its target; if it is above freezing, set a below-freezing value such as -5°C.
- Inspect the room temperature and an actual food stack; check again after normal door traffic or a weather change.
- If the room stays warm, continue through orientation, roof and power before buying another cooler.

Follow the blue and red sides
The blue placement tile identifies the cooled side; it must face the food room. The red side releases heat. An enclosed, roofed exhaust pocket can accumulate heat that leaks back toward the freezer. Pointing that side outdoors is the simplest diagnostic layout; the community wiki also describes an unroofed chimney as an alternative, subject to the map's roof and construction limits.
Check the roof overlay separately on both sides: the intended food room needs enclosure and a roof, while the proposed chimney must actually be unroofed. Do not assume a mountain roof can be removed. The community cooler page reports that impassable structures can block an adjacent output tile, but also describes a closed door exception on the hot side. Check the cooler's actual status and both tiles; do not generalize that every door necessarily blocks it.
| Observation | Likely check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Blue side is outside the food room | Orientation is reversed | Rotate an unbuilt blueprint or rebuild the installed cooler so blue faces the intended room; check work and material cost |
| Red side faces a closed, roofed pocket | Exhaust heat can build up and leak back | Use a valid outdoor exhaust or an actually unroofed chimney |
| Temperature reads outdoors in the stockpile | A wall, door or roof may be missing | Complete the enclosure and check the roof overlay |
| Both sides look correct but room stays warm | Target, power, heat and doors remain possible causes | Check the following steps before adding capacity |

Check power and the load when the cooler is active
The cited community cooler reference gives 200 W while actively cooling and 20 W in its low-power state. A machine that has reached its target may draw the lower amount, so a single low reading does not prove the grid can support an active cooler when the freezer warms. Inspect the connected grid and confirm that a solar flare, switch, broken conduit or unavailable generation is not interrupting supply.
Worked planning example, not an observed colony: suppose two powered coolers both call for cooling, other appliances draw 350 W and generation is only 600 W. The named loads total 2 × 200 + 350 = 750 W, a 150 W generation deficit. Stored battery energy could cover the gap temporarily; its actual capacity, charge and other loads determine how long. This is not a prediction that the grid immediately fails, nor a measured runtime.
| Hypothetical state | Cooler demand | With 350 W other load | Compared with 600 W generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Both actively cooling | 400 W | 750 W | 150 W deficit before battery contribution |
| Both in low state | 40 W | 390 W | 210 W nominal generation surplus |
| One active, one low | 220 W | 570 W | 30 W nominal generation surplus |

Reduce heat leaks, then decide whether to expand
Open doors transfer heat rapidly. Check whether a freezer door is being held open or used as a through-route. A small enclosed buffer with two doors can reduce direct exchange when pawns pass through; its usefulness depends on actual movement and the room layout. Check that both doors can close and that pawns have an alternate route if the store is serving as a hallway.
A larger room, hot exterior, open doors or insufficient insulation can make a fixed number of coolers inadequate. Double walls can reduce wall heat transfer, but they do not solve a broken roof, a disconnected cooler or a sealed hot exhaust. Change one identifiable cause, observe the actual room and item status, and add a cooler only when supply and heat leakage are addressed. No fixed cooler-to-room-size ratio is promised here.
- Check weather, outdoor and freezer temperatures, and note whether door traffic holds a door open.
- Repair missing roof or wall, remove an unnecessary through-route, or try a two-door buffer where space permits.
- After the chosen change, monitor the actual room and food; if it remains above freezing, inspect demand and consider another powered cooler.

Budget a new powered cooler separately from the room
The community cooler page lists Air conditioning research, Construction skill 5, and a build cost of 90 Steel plus 3 Components. A hypothetical stock of 125 Steel and 2 Components can cover the Steel but is one Component short for one new cooler. That excludes new walls, doors, conduits, repairs and builder availability; existing equipment and mods may change the plan.
A passive cooler is a different building, not a drop-in freezer replacement. The community reference says its temperature floor is 17°C, above the freezer threshold. It may help make a hot room less uncomfortable, but cannot by itself bring food to frozen temperature. Check research and the installed game's actual build menu before planning either building.
| Item | One powered cooler | Hypothetical stock | Remaining before construction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel | 90 | 125 | 0 short; 35 left before other work |
| Components | 3 | 2 | 1 short |
| Research and builder | Air conditioning; Construction 5 | Not specified | Check both separately |

Keep a useful troubleshooting record
Record the installed version and any mods, the room and outdoor temperatures, the cooler target and grid state, roof and exhaust layout, then change one suspected fault. Record the later reading and food state rather than turning this proposed procedure into a claim that it was played or measured.

- Check actual food and room temperature, not only the cooler target.
- Set a below-freezing target and confirm the blue side faces the store.
- Check the red exhaust, roof and enclosure.
- Inspect active grid load, available generation and battery charge.
- Fix avoidable heat leaks before assuming another cooler is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Will setting -100°C cool the room faster than setting -5°C?
The listed cooler has active and idle states rather than a variable speed tied to a lower target. A much lower setting does not guarantee a faster cool-down; check the installed build and actual room conditions.
Can a passive cooler freeze food?
The cited community reference lists its minimum at about 17°C, so it cannot reach freezing by itself.
Does frozen food stop deteriorating outside?
Freezing stops spoilage, but outdoor or unroofed storage can still allow deterioration and hit-point loss. Inspect the item's actual storage status and the room enclosure as well as its roof.
