First identify which kind of short happened
The Wiki describes two separate Zzztt triggers: a powered regular conduit and a weather-exposed electrical building. They need different corrections. A fire at one regular cable does not mean every generator is too small; an unroofed battery in rain is not fixed by swapping a distant cable. Pause, inspect the event location and the roof overlay, and trace the exact network affected.
Connected batteries can discharge during a short and intensify the event. The same battery stock behind an off switch is a separate grid, so it is not part of that discharge until you deliberately reconnect it. This is a risk-reduction layout, not a promise that an emergency grid is always safe or fully charged.
| What you observe | Likely first branch | Check before rebuilding |
|---|---|---|
| Fault centered on a normal conduit | Powered regular cable can be a Zzztt target | Use the power overlay; identify all regular segments on that circuit |
| Fault at battery or electric building during rain/snow | Weather exposure | Check the roof directly above that building and whether it is powered |
| Main batteries empty after the event | Connected storage discharged | Inspect charge and switch states before reconnecting a backup |
| Only one room stays dark after the fire | Broken line or separate grid | Follow adjacency and use Reconnect on an appliance if needed |

Retrofit the actual risk, not a generic 'best base' blueprint
Hidden conduits were added in version 1.5. The community Wiki says they do not short like regular conduits, but cost two Steel and take more construction work per tile. They still need a directly connected power path; an appliance can draw from a line up to six tiles away, but two separate conduit segments do not bridge a six-tile gap. Inspect connectivity after each replacement phase.
For a small, illustrative 12-tile corridor, twelve hidden segments require 24 Steel at the cited two Steel per tile. Twelve ordinary segments would require 12 Steel to build from scratch. That is a 12-Steel difference for newly built lines, not a promise about materials recovered when removing old cable. If Steel is scarce, prioritize the powered regular segments that would put critical rooms or connected batteries at risk and finish the route in stages.
- Pause and map the powered regular-conduit tiles on the affected network using the power overlay.
- Mark a replacement path with hidden conduit from the source or battery to the essential consumers. Verify the entire path remains adjacent; do not assume proximity between conduits creates a connection.
- Build the replacement, then inspect the power graph and at least one essential appliance before deconstructing the old line.
- Remove only the old regular segments that are no longer necessary. Recheck that no powered regular segment remains on the route you intended to protect.
- Separately check roofing over batteries and applicable powered workstations exposed to weather; conduit replacement alone does not remove that risk.

Keep a backup battery genuinely separate
A Power switch can divide grids when off. Charge an emergency battery group, then isolate it behind a switch and verify the switch actually shows off. The Wiki says batteries behind an off switch are not discharged by a short on the main grid. When you need that reserve, deliberately reconnect it after inspecting the damaged circuit rather than leaving the two sides permanently merged.
Roof the backup batteries too. The purpose is to preserve some stored energy and reduce the event's reach; the reserve's actual charge, switch placement and ability to power your intended loads must be checked in the save. The game does not automatically operate this recovery plan for you.
| State | What it means | Player check |
|---|---|---|
| Switch on | Battery group shares the connected grid | Charge it, but recognize it is exposed to that grid's short |
| Switch off | Battery group is isolated | Verify charge, roof and the path needed for an emergency |
| Main grid shorts | Connected storage can discharge | Inspect fire and broken line before joining the reserve |
| Reserve reconnected | Emergency load can draw from it | Watch the actual remaining Wd and the affected circuit |

Worked diagnosis: cable risk plus a rainy battery
Illustrative plan, not an observed save: a colony has twelve powered ordinary conduit tiles, one battery under open sky, and a second charged battery behind an off switch indoors. A Zzztt at a regular tile can drain the first connected battery; the isolated reserve should not share that discharge while its switch remains off. Replacing the twelve ordinary tiles with a continuous hidden route addresses that cable-trigger branch, but the first battery still needs a roof against rain or snow.
The two fixes solve different conditions. If the next event is centered on the unroofed battery, more hidden conduit was not the missing action. If an appliance remains dark after the retrofit, trace the new route and switch state before assuming the short changed generator output.

Record a check that another player can reproduce
Record the installed version and mods, weather, event location, roof overlay, conduit type, power grid and charge before/after the event. Do not invent a rate of Zzztt prevention from a short play session. A screenshot of the power overlay and the roofed battery area is more useful than a generic base image.
This page gives a diagnosis and construction plan, not a promise that one retrofit solves every outage. For a separate food, cooling or generation shortfall, use the related stability guide rather than treating every loss of power as a Zzztt event.

Frequently asked questions
Do hidden conduits make Zzztt impossible?
They remove the regular-conduit short target described by the cited Wiki, but exposed powered buildings can still short in rain or snow. Other power failures and fires also remain possible.
Will a bigger battery prevent the next short?
No. Connected stored energy can discharge during a short. Address the triggering conduit/weather condition and consider an isolated reserve behind a switch.
Does a power switch turn a battery off?
It disconnects grids when off; the battery can still hold or slowly lose its stored charge. Confirm the actual connection and charge before relying on it.
