Simple-meal rice budget

Standard single simple meals, using rice only: 10 rice per meal. Count edible meals and rice you can actually spare, not growing plants, reserved food or inaccessible stacks. This calculates ingredients, not days of survival.

Your rice-only plan

The rice entered cannot cover the full target. Plan a smaller batch or obtain the missing ingredients; a larger bill cannot create food.

Excludes bulk-recipe rounding, mixed ingredients, modded recipes, spoilage, consumption, cooking time and job availability. Check your installed recipe. All outputs are arithmetic, not a tested colony result.

Evidence-backed case analysis

Case: four freezer layouts at 50°C outdoors

Author-reported historical experiment · RimWorld 1.4

Version boundary
RimWorld 1.4. The author does not specify the exact 1.4 patch. This is historical evidence, not a claim of validation on 1.6 or a later version.
Starting conditions
ashen_cone's stated setup: no mods, all three DLCs then available, Extreme Desert during a heat wave, 50°C outdoors, 9 × 9 interior, slate construction, no floor. The basic setup used two coolers.

If a powered freezer is still warm, will changing the enclosure help more than immediately buying another cooler?

Original evidence: A Definitive Guide to Efficient Freezers [1.4] by ashen_cone / Ashen Cone. See Prerequisite, Standard, Mountain Freezer and Double Wall Freezer. These are selected reported results, not the author's complete design catalogue.

Our analysis: what to change first

The practical difference is crossing the freezing threshold, not simply displaying a lower number. A room at +6°C is not a freezer. In these reported conditions, the standard-roof double-wall design reached −6°C: 12 Celsius degrees below the +6°C baseline. That is a temperature difference, not a 12% efficiency improvement.

Use the comparison to choose a small, testable change. In an existing colony, inspect the enclosure before adding demand to the power grid. Moving the whole food chain under a mountain is a much larger decision than insulating the room you already use; a colder historical reading alone is not a complete base-location recommendation.

Temperature is only one link in food security. A successful room test does not show that ingredients are being hauled, meals are being cooked or your power supply will survive an outage. After stabilizing the room, follow one real food batch through those steps.

A procedure you can check on your own save

This is GamerWin's proposed verification procedure. The checks below describe what to observe, not results we have already obtained.

  1. Keep a separate save. Record your build, DLCs, mods, outdoor temperature, roof types and interior dimensions. For a controlled comparison, use a 9 × 9 interior and do not change its size between layouts.

Check: If your conditions differ from the historical experiment, label the result a local comparison, not a replication of the published temperatures.

  2. Check that the room is enclosed and roofed, the coolers have power, and their cold sides face in while their hot sides can reject heat outside. Keep the same two coolers and unobstructed exhaust throughout the comparison.

Check: Fix an open roof, blocked exhaust or disconnected cooler first. An enclosure test with a broken cooling system answers the wrong question.

  3. Choose one setpoint below the temperatures you want to compare and keep it fixed. For our proposed standard-roof trial, −20°C is a usable starting setting; it is our protocol choice, not a recovered setting from the author's test.

Check: Read the room temperature, not only the thermostat. If the room reaches the setpoint and the coolers idle, that reading is not its maximum cooling capacity.

  4. Record a baseline after the temperature settles. Take readings across a normal hauling period as well as with the doors closed. Keep the outside conditions and door-use pattern in your notes; do not pretend a heat wave stayed constant if it ended.

Check: Capture indoor and outdoor readings together. Note whether the food's information panel actually reports it as frozen.

  5. Add an outer wall layer while preserving the usable interior. Keep cooler count, setpoint, roof and door arrangement unchanged for this local A/B comparison; do not enclose the exhaust. Repeat the same observation period.

Check: This isolates your wall change more closely than rebuilding everything. It is not an exact copy of the author's complete layout, which you should consult separately if attempting a historical replication.

  6. Resume normal hauling and cooking. Follow a harvested stack into accepted cold storage and confirm a meal batch can be produced and stored. If food is still outside, resolve the hauling or storage restriction instead of making the room colder.

Check: Pass condition: the intended food is stored, stays frozen during ordinary use, and reaches cooking when needed. Do not call the whole food chain fixed from a single negative temperature reading.

Your result differs from the historical tableKeep your reading. Compare build, weather, roof, room size and geometry; do not replace measured data with the published value.

Case conclusion

The historical experiment supports investigating enclosure design before expanding cooling. It does not promise −6°C in your colony. The useful result for your save is a measured improvement with food remaining frozen under normal use, followed by a working harvest-to-meal chain.

Count usable food, not just the farm size

A large growing zone is not a meal reserve. Look separately at edible stock already stored, harvests near completion and the work needed to cook them. Crops still growing cannot cover tonight's hunger. Expand the field only if someone can sow and harvest it in time.

Rice is a quick-growing, labor-intensive starter crop and is sensitive to soil fertility. Its listed growing time is not the same as elapsed calendar time under normal day/night conditions. Use the plant's actual growth and local conditions when planning, not a promise that a harvest will arrive exactly three days after sowing.

Use a meal budget you can actually check

The community reference lists a simple meal as using 0.5 nutrition in raw ingredients—equivalent to 10 rice for that ingredient. Making 12 new simple meals therefore needs 120 rice if rice is the only ingredient. Subtract existing cooked stock first when twelve is your total-stock target. This is recipe arithmetic, not a promise of food for a fixed number of days.

Set a cooking bill such as 'Do until you have' with a modest target, inspect its ingredient restrictions, and assign an available cook. Increase the target only after you know meals will be eaten or preserved before spoiling. Cooking every vegetable immediately can shorten the useful shelf life of an otherwise longer-lasting raw reserve.

Keep the cooking area clean and do not route unnecessary dirty traffic through it. If a pawn has to cross the entire map for each ingredient haul, bring allowed storage closer before deciding you need another cook.

Work a meal target backwards from usable stock

The calculator's target is the total cooked stock you want, not the number of new meals to make. Existing meals are subtracted before buying or growing more ingredients. If twelve is the target and five usable meals already exist, budget seven new meals rather than another twelve.

Worked example, not a gameplay observation: target 12, cooked stock 5, available rice 30. Seven additional meals require 70 rice, leaving a 40-rice shortfall. The 30 rice can support three new meals, giving eight meals before anyone eats or food is lost. That is an ingredient ceiling, not proof that the cook can finish in time.

A second arithmetic example: target 6, cooked stock 1, rice 59. Five new meals require 50 rice, so the target is covered with nine rice left. If the cooked stock already meets the target, the tool budgets no new meals and leaves the entered rice untouched.

  1. Count edible cooked food intended for this reserve. Exclude food committed elsewhere; do not count growing plants as available ingredients.
  2. Enter rice that is harvested, accessible and allowed by the cooking bill. Keep any rice you want for other purposes out of this budget.
  3. Use the rice shortfall to distinguish a supply gap from a work gap. When ingredients are covered but meals do not appear, inspect the bill, workstation, cook and hauling instead of enlarging the farm immediately.
  4. Use a single-meal recipe for the exact arithmetic shown. A four-meal batch may overshoot a small remainder; this tool does not round to batch sizes. Check the bill's actual progress and recount after consumption or spoilage.

Build a freezer that can reject heat

An electric cooler moves heat; it does not make both sides cold. Place it in an enclosing wall with the blue side facing the food room and the red side exhausting outdoors. Finish the room's walls and roof, close openings, and set a target below 0°C. A small negative target such as -5°C is a starting setting, not a guarantee under every climate.

Check actual room temperature after it runs. A blocked hot side, a missing roof, repeated open-door traffic or insufficient cooling capacity can prevent the target being reached. Lowering the target far below freezing does not magically make one cooler powerful enough for any room.

Food storage filters matter too: a perfectly cold room is useless if meals are still being hauled to an outside stockpile. Confirm the preferred stockpile accepts the intended items and that pawns can reach it.

Work through failures in order

Use a single item batch as a tracer. Follow it from raw ingredient to finished meal to storage. If you can identify where that batch stops, you can fix the relevant system instead of enlarging the whole colony.

Plan for power interruptions

Check that generation and wiring actually supply the cooler and stove. For wind generation, inspect the required clearance and obstructions; a turbine's existence is not proof of dependable output. Keep a way to prepare or use food during an interruption rather than treating batteries as unlimited generation.

After an outage, inspect food condition and the actual freezer temperature before resuming a large cooking batch. Keep a reserve appropriate to your colony's observed consumption and risks. A practical estimate uses your last few stable days, then adds a buffer for injury, visitors or weather—not a universal meals-per-pawn promise.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my freezer warm at a very low target?

A target is not cooling capacity. Check power, roof, doors, hot-side exhaust and room size before adding equipment.

Does a 12-meal budget guarantee several days of food?

No. Consumption varies. The 120-rice example is recipe arithmetic for 12 simple meals, not a survival-duration guarantee.
