Complete the in-game link flow in order

Obsidian's Grounded 2 support steps begin with the identity shown in the main menu beneath the game version. In Options, switch Enable Crossplay on, read and accept the explanation, then follow the on-screen Microsoft/Xbox account linking instructions. Enter the displayed code on the prompted device and sign in to the account you actually intend to use.

The one-account linking warning matters: do not casually try several accounts to troubleshoot. First verify the correct Microsoft/Xbox account, then check that its Gamertag appears in the main menu after the confirmation screen. That is a setup checkpoint, not proof that a friend's invite, network path or entitlement is working.

  1. At the main menu, write down the displayed platform identity and game version for each player; confirm everyone is launching Grounded 2, not the original Grounded.
  2. Open Options and turn Enable Crossplay on. Read the in-game explanation and choose Accept to open the account-link instructions.
  3. Use the provided code and sign in to the intended Microsoft/Xbox account on the prompted device. Do not link an account you would not want permanently associated with this game.
  4. Return to the main menu and check that the expected Xbox Gamertag appears. If not, stop and resolve the account confirmation before changing worlds or repeating invites.
  5. Each player checks that their platform-specific online-service subscription is active. Then have the host create or load the intended world and send a fresh invite using the current in-game flow.

Use checkpoints to identify where the setup stops

This table separates account linking from multiplayer access. It does not assert that every platform's service is subscribed, every friend request is deliverable, or every version can join every session; compare the exact message and current platform requirements when a later checkpoint fails.

CheckpointWhat you can confirmNext safe check
Crossplay toggleEnable Crossplay is on in OptionsRead the in-game explanation and continue to account linking
Account confirmationThe intended Xbox Gamertag appears on the main menuIf absent, verify the one linked account and confirmation flow; do not cycle accounts blindly

Worked example: account name appears, but a friend cannot join

Illustrative diagnostic, not a tested session: the host sees the expected Gamertag after linking, but a friend on another platform cannot join. The account-link checkpoint has passed; the join itself has not. Next verify the friend's Crossplay toggle and account confirmation, each player's platform online-service requirement, then compare the exact invite/error and both displayed game versions. Avoid unlinking or relinking accounts as a first response when the official guide limits a game to one linked Microsoft/Xbox account.

Do not equate cross-play with cross-save

Obsidian's cross-platform setup article covers cross-platform multiplayer, Shared Worlds and Playground transfer. A separate FAQ's cross-save statement is specifically about progress between PC and Xbox, and its platform list is older than later platform availability. So a player who can join a cross-platform session should not assume that every platform pair shares or converts saves. Verify current platform-specific save support separately before switching devices or relying on a world copy.

Before you play

  • All players are in Grounded 2 and have recorded the displayed version.
  • Crossplay is enabled and the intended Xbox Gamertag is visible for each linked player.
  • Each player's platform-specific online-service requirement is checked.
  • A fresh invite is tested only after setup checkpoints pass; any failure is recorded with exact text.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Xbox or Microsoft account when I play on Steam or PlayStation?

Obsidian's Grounded 2 cross-platform setup article says a free Xbox Live account is required for cross-platform multiplayer, Shared Worlds, and Playground upload/download. Follow the in-game linking flow and verify the right account.

Can I link multiple Microsoft/Xbox accounts to one game?

Obsidian warns that only one Microsoft/Xbox account can be linked to the game. Check the account before confirming the link.

Does seeing my Gamertag prove multiplayer is fixed?

No. It confirms the account-link checkpoint described by Obsidian. The online-service requirement, invite and actual world join are separate checks.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 5, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Obsidian Support: Grounded 2 Cross Platform Support (Official)

Official cross-play setup article updated August 11, 2026; read November 5, 2026. It requires a free Xbox Live account for cross-platform multiplayer, Shared Worlds and Playground uploads/downloads, plus each platform's online subscription. Only one Microsoft/Xbox account may be linked to the game.

  2. Obsidian Support: Grounded 2 FAQ (Official)

Official FAQ updated July 29, 2025; read November 5, 2026. Its narrow cross-save answer says PC/Xbox progress saving, but its platform list predates later platform availability. We use it only to avoid implying that cross-play setup proves cross-progression for every platform pair.

What changed in this revision

November 5, 2026: added a Grounded 2-specific cross-play sequence from Obsidian Support, with one-account and platform-service caveats. No accounts were linked and no lobby was tested.
