Treat study as a staged preparation, not a guaranteed shortcut
Paradox's official design diary describes Study Faith as a Learning-based scheme with phases and success chance affected by Learning, Piety and traits/perks. It says phase outcomes can add Tenet or Doctrine knowledge, and conversion may be offered at the end of a successful study. More prior knowledge makes the transition gentler in Piety and Devotion loss. This is a relationship, not a fixed numeric discount.
- Open the current Faith interface and identify the target character's faith/Rite and your own character's knowledge percentage.
- Check whether Study Faith is actually available for this character, target and installed expansion/platform state.
- Read the current scheme's displayed duration, phase choices and success chance before committing; the diary does not provide a universal outcome table.
- During or after study, verify which Tenets/Doctrines moved from Unknown to Known in the live Faith view.
- If conversion is offered, inspect its current Piety/Devotion consequences before selecting it. If not, do not assume the scheme failed—the event/outcome sequence may differ.

What to learn first
The official diary does not rank a universally optimal learning order. Choose a target faith that answers a role-play or strategic need, then examine which teachings matter to the character and realm you actually control. A foreign spouse, guest or neighboring ruler can be a potential source for study according to the diary, but availability still depends on the live character and scheme rules.
| Player goal | Useful check before starting | Why not rush conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Adopt one different moral/tenet practice | Which target Tenets are Core or Permitted and which are Unknown to your character | More knowledge can reduce transition penalties per the diary |
| Change doctrine structure | Which target Doctrines are known and what the current Faith UI requires | Doctrine knowledge may be prerequisite for later structural changes |
| Convert a ruler for realm reasons | Target's local/vassal acceptance, current Piety and Devotion prompt | The source gives no guarantee of political acceptance or free conversion |
| Only explore another character's faith | Study duration, target access and current scheme event options | It is a scheme with time and chance, not an instant menu toggle |

Verify final 1.20 behavior and scope
The By God Alone feature set and free Crozier update do not expose the same set of actions to every ruler or platform. The final release notes and current interface supersede the earlier design diary. If a study action is absent or an outcome differs, first identify whether the feature is listed as paid or free, then capture the current build, DLC state, character faith and exact prompt.

Ask players with a reproducible case
A helpful peer question includes target and player faith/Rite, relevant Tenet/Doctrine knowledge, scheme phase, character Learning and the exact conversion prompt. Label the result as a save-specific observation. This page is source-based editorial guidance and has not been tested in a live campaign.

Before you play
- I confirmed Study Faith exists in this build and for this target.
- I recorded learned Tenets/Doctrines from the Faith UI rather than guessing from a diary.
- I read the live conversion cost and Devotion consequences before accepting.
- I made no assumption that study guarantees conversion or removes all cost.
Frequently asked questions
Does Study Faith make conversion free?
No. Paradox says prior knowledge can make conversion gentler in Piety and Devotion lost; it does not say conversion has no cost.
Which character should I study?
There is no universal best target in the official source. Choose a character whose faith is relevant and whose scheme is available in your current save.
Was this process tested in a campaign?
No. This is source-based guidance. The current scheme panel in your build is authoritative.
