Read the preview, then make one controlled edit
Update 1.20 adds a Divergence breakdown and contribution values on individual Tenets during Rite creation or editing. The developer diary explains that statuses relative to the Mainline Rite affect the score; changes that seem small in isolation can add up. The in-game preview is the authoritative calculation for the current build.
- Open the current Rite panel and record the Mainline Rite and the Rite you intend to edit.
- Before each proposed Tenet or Doctrine change, note its displayed contribution and predicted resulting Divergence.
- Enter the contribution values in the local ledger below to check your arithmetic; compare its sum with the game preview.
- If the total reaches the 50-point review marker, pause and read the current warning, faith state and any heresy/Church status before confirming.
- Make one change at a time and re-open the live breakdown; do not combine an unreviewed bundle of changes based on an external recipe.

What the 50 marker does—and does not—say
Paradox's developer diary calls 50 or more ‘potentially heretical territory’. The final update adds a Declare a Rite Heretical decision using the Faith's current heresy threshold and says maximum Divergence immediately branches into a new Faith. Those are different statements: the marker is a warning band, while the current game's UI and situation determine the actual decision and outcome. Faith Fervor also responds to Rite distribution and drift, so a score alone cannot model the wider consequences.
| Entered total | Safe reading | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Below 50 | Below the diary's cited review marker at this snapshot | That the Rite cannot drift or trigger another effect |
| 50 or higher | Pause: the diary describes this as potentially heretical territory | That a Pope will declare heresy immediately or that one universal threshold applies |
| Maximum Divergence shown in game | The release notes say it immediately branches into a new Faith | That a third-party calculator can identify the current maximum for every faith |

Use the local ledger only as a cross-check
The example values in the planner are invented arithmetic inputs, not a real named Rite or recommended build. If an item subtracts or otherwise changes Divergence in your installed version, follow the visible in-game value and do not force it into this non-negative contribution checker. The planner cannot estimate conversion rates, Fervor, political response or map spread.

Report an actual result without presenting a theory as a test
If the live total or effect differs from the source snapshot, report the exact build, platform, faith/Mainline Rite, before-and-after breakdown and the UI message. Steam community discussion is player-generated, and GamerWin has not reproduced the report.

Before you play
- I used the current in-game Divergence breakdown and did not rely on an old online recipe.
- I compared the planner's arithmetic with the preview before confirming.
- I treated 50+ as a review warning, not a guaranteed heresy event.
- I captured the exact installed build and faith context if the UI differed.
Frequently asked questions
Does 50 Divergence instantly make the Rite a heresy?
No such guarantee is stated. The developer diary describes 50+ as potentially heretical territory; the release notes distinguish a faith's current heresy threshold and maximum Divergence. Check the current UI.
Can the planner tell me how the Pope will respond?
No. It only adds the values you enter and marks whether the total crosses 50. It does not model Church politics, Fervor or decisions.
Is the worked 44-point example a real Rite?
No. It is illustrative arithmetic only; no game state was tested.

Paradox's official Steam announcement feed; the May 5, 2026 developer diary describes displayed Divergence contributions, the 50-point potentially-heretical marker, Rite spread and a pre-release 100-point immediate-heresy example. Treat the final 1.20 release changelog and live UI as authoritative; the tool deliberately reports only the 50-point review marker.
