Use the official release-note boundary
The 1.20.0 Crozier changelog explicitly divides the feature list into ‘Expansion Features (Paid)’ and ‘Free Features’. The Christian Church Situation belongs to the paid heading; Rites and Divergence belong to the free heading. That distinction explains why two players on the same 1.20 build may see different church panels without either installation necessarily being broken.
| Feature a player is looking for | Release-note category | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Rites, Rite creation, Heads of Rite, Divergence | Free Update 1.20 | Confirm the game actually runs 1.20+ and inspect the faith/Rite interface |
| Christian Church Situation and its shared Chapter | Paid By God Alone expansion | Confirm the expansion is installed/enabled, then check Christian ruler tier eligibility |
| Playable landed theocracy / Pope | Paid By God Alone expansion | Confirm expansion entitlement and the chosen start/government |
| Study Faith, personal Tenets and spiritual fulfillment | Check exact item under the final changelog headings | Do not infer paid/free status from an old diary or a video thumbnail |

Check eligibility after checking ownership
The release changelog says every Christian ruler of County tier or above participates in the paid Christian Church Situation. That is a narrower test than ‘I am playing Crusader Kings III’ and different from free Rites appearing in a faith interface. Read the actual situation and faith UI in your save after confirming the update and expansion state.
- Record the exact game version displayed by your launcher or main menu; the checked hotfix is 1.20.1.2, not a claim that no later build exists.
- Name the missing control or panel: a Rite option, the Christian Church Situation, playable clerical government or another feature.
- For an expansion feature, confirm By God Alone is owned, installed and enabled for this platform/account; the product page says the DLC requires the base game.
- For the Christian Situation specifically, confirm your ruler is Christian and County tier or higher in the current save.
- If those checks pass, disable mods for a controlled check and consult the current official 1.20.x hotfix notes before changing files or starting a new campaign.

Avoid the two common misdiagnoses
A paid expansion panel missing without the expansion is not evidence that the free 1.20 update failed. Conversely, Rites being in the free list does not make every Christian Church interaction free. Keep those two claim types separate when asking for help, and do not buy or reinstall anything until the game's platform-specific entitlement screen is checked.
| Observed state | Interpretation | Next useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Rites exist, Church Situation absent | May be the expected free/paid split | Expansion ownership, Christian faith, County tier and build |
| No Rite/Divergence options on 1.20+ | Not explained by missing paid expansion alone | Current faith type, mods, exact UI location and hotfix |
| Situation present but no desired action | Participation does not imply every action is available | Chapter, character role, faith, requirements and current tooltip |
| Feature access differs by console/store | The checked sources do not verify every platform rollout | Platform-specific current patch and entitlement screen |

Before you play
- I checked the final 1.20 release changelog rather than relying on a pre-release feature list.
- I separated free Rites/Divergence from the paid Christian Church Situation and playable theocracy features.
- I recorded the exact platform, build, DLC state, faith and ruler tier.
- I did not treat a public discussion reply as official or tested support.

The release notes list that Situation under paid By God Alone features and say Christian rulers of County tier or above participate. Confirm expansion entitlement and in-save eligibility.
