Choose by the gap in your defense

A hero is one part of the setup. Before selecting one, identify the map's longest useful attack window and the threat you cannot yet handle. A short-range hero on a separated lane can leave another entrance unattended even if it is excellent on a tight bend.

The following comparison deliberately omits a numerical tier score. It gives you a placement question and a support requirement that you can check in your own run. If a hero is still locked, learn with the one you already have rather than treating an unlock as a requirement to finish beginner maps.

HeroWhy try itDo not assume
QuincyA straightforward ranged starting point; good for learning placement and ability timingHis initial level cannot see camo; the community reference lists camo detection at level 5.
SaudaA close-range option for bends where bloons stay in reach; detects camo from the startHer early normal attack does not solve lead bloons. Abilities or support are a separate plan.
EtienneAt level 8, the reference lists team-wide camo detectionThat later support does not provide immediate early camo coverage, or lead-popping power to every tower.

Use the range circle as a placement test

Pause before placing the hero. Look for a position covering multiple passes of the track without a line-of-sight obstacle blocking the useful section. For Sauda, trace how long a bloon is actually inside the small radius, not how central the hero looks on the map.

A helpful comparison is to run the same easy map twice with the same supporting towers. Change only the hero position. Note where leaks start and whether an ability can still catch them. This isolates placement from spending and produces a lesson you can reuse on a new map.

On split lanes, plan support for the uncovered lane from the start. Do not keep spending on one hero's position while an entirely different entrance leaks. Moving to a more suitable hero or adding independent lane coverage may be the more relevant adjustment.

Check camo and lead independently

Camo is a visibility problem; lead is a damage-type problem. Solving one does not automatically solve both. Write down the actual tower or hero state that covers each before the corresponding wave arrives. On ordinary standard rounds, camo first appears on 24 and lead on 28; Alternate Bloons Rounds and custom challenges can differ.

For example, a level-5 Quincy can see camo according to the reference, but that observation alone does not prove the defense handles lead. A Sauda opening can cover early camo, while a separate lead-capable tower reduces reliance on perfectly timed abilities. Check the current upgrade descriptions for the support you choose.

Make abilities a plan, not a panic button

Select a visible trigger: 'use the ability when the dangerous group reaches the long bend' is easier to execute than 'use it when things look bad.' If you activate too late, the bloons may leave the useful area before the ability helps. If too early, it may expire before the threat arrives.

After losing, record the round, the leaking bloon type, hero level and whether the ability was ready. Keep the hero if the failure was simply a missing damage type. Change the hero only when its range, timing or support role is the repeated problem. This prevents buying another hero to solve a tower-upgrade mistake.

Before you play

  • Range and track overlap checked before placement.
  • An explicit camo answer and lead answer chosen.
  • Ability trigger decided before a dangerous wave.
  • Hero level and leaking bloon type recorded after a loss.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sauda the best hero on every beginner map?

No. Short range rewards good track geometry. Split paths, restrictions and a different tower plan can change the choice.

Does Etienne remove every special-bloon problem?

No. Team-wide camo detection is not universal damage conversion. Your towers still need the appropriate damage and enough strength.
