Check the recipe gate and the construction gate separately
Seeing a Portal Stone recipe in a reference does not prove your character has unlocked it. The cited 1.0.20 database lists four discovery gates: Greydwarf Eye, Grausten, Molten Core and the Stonecutter station. Treat discovery and build placement as separate checks: you also need a Hammer, the listed items, and a valid build location near the Stonecutter.
The independent wiki page confirms the listed placement station and three material quantities. Because the detailed inputs are reported from different reference snapshots, open the Hammer menu in your current world before committing a long expedition or dismantling another base structure.
- Open the Hammer build menu in the target world and search for Portal – Stone; note whether the recipe is still hidden or merely short on materials.
- If hidden, compare discovery history against Greydwarf Eye, Grausten, Molten Core and Stonecutter; a missing discovery is not fixed by collecting more of an already-known item.
- If visible, count 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 30 Grausten and 2 Molten Cores for each planned Stone Portal, then verify the construction site is near a Stonecutter.
- Build or position a compatible departure portal at the far end as well. A Stone Portal’s cargo exception does not automatically make the linked wooden endpoint equivalent for the return trip.
- Test the route with a low-risk, non-restricted load before committing valuable cargo, and record both directions separately.

Worked bill: two Stone Portals versus one mixed pair
For one Stone Portal, the source bill is 10 Eyes + 30 Grausten + 2 Molten Cores. For two Stone Portals, multiply each by two: 20 Eyes, 60 Grausten and 4 Molten Cores. This arithmetic does not include the Stonecutter, Hammer, workbenches, travel supplies, structural supports or any separate wooden portals.
A one-Stone/one-wood pair costs fewer Stone Portal materials, but it can create asymmetric restricted-cargo travel under standard rules. If your expedition must return with ore or metal, decide whether the world setting, endpoint type or non-portal transport solves that return before you sail out. The two designs are not interchangeable just because both may connect.
| Plan | Eyes | Grausten | Molten Cores | Cargo planning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One Stone Portal | 10 | 30 | 2 | One Stone endpoint; identify the other departure endpoint |
| Two Stone Portals | 20 | 60 | 4 | Both departures use the cited Stone exception; confirm world setting |
| One Stone + one wooden Portal | 20 total across both recipes | 30 | 2 | Potentially asymmetric for restricted cargo on the wooden departure |
| Two wooden Portals | 20 | 0 | 0 | Standard portal restrictions remain; world modifiers may change them |

Choose a route without assuming a current-version unlock
The Portal Stone is an Ashlands-associated building piece in the cited game-data sources. That is not a guarantee about where any one player will find every required material: spawn, exploration, world settings and progression differ. Use the in-game map, discovery state and current item descriptions, then budget only what your save actually lacks.
If you are not at the Portal Stone stage, the standard portal still handles much ordinary travel, while the cited world-mechanics page says ore transport can be enabled by a world modifier. Choose that setting only if it fits the group’s preferred rules; it is a world-level gameplay choice, not a hidden repair toggle.
| Observed state | Interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe absent | Possible missing discovery or changed rule | Inspect Hammer menu, known materials, Stonecutter and current world setting |
| Recipe visible, red ingredients | Known recipe but insufficient stock | Use the bill checker and count each item once |
| Portal built but cargo blocked | Route and materials are different questions | Check the departure portal type and world portal modifier |
| Outbound succeeds, return fails | The opposite departure may apply the standard restriction | Plan the return endpoint before taking restricted items through |

Resolve version disagreement with the installed recipe
The community build-cost page labels its record 1.0.20, while the world-mechanics page identifies 1.0.21 data. That one-patch difference is why the checker states its source snapshot and why a visible in-game recipe should take precedence over a cached reference.
If a cost or unlock differs, capture the installed build number and the current Hammer recipe before changing a material plan. Send the discrepancy through the contribution page; do not silently substitute an unverified recipe into a guide used by other players.
- Check the game build shown by your platform or main menu.
- Open the actual Portal – Stone recipe and note the station and remaining requirements.
- Compare each material quantity with the reference and the current world modifier.
- Report only the changed field and the context needed to reproduce it; redact player and server identifiers.

Before you play
- Verify the current Hammer recipe; the guide cites data from 1.0.20 and 1.0.21 sources.
- Count Portal Stone and wooden Portal bills separately.
- Treat discovery prerequisites as distinct from having enough ingredients to build.
- Test cargo permission for both travel directions before a high-value haul.
- Do not treat a route example as a confirmed item-spawn location or safe biome itinerary.
Frequently asked questions
What does one Portal Stone cost in the cited database?
10 Greydwarf Eyes, 30 Grausten and 2 Molten Cores. The database labels its record Valheim 1.0.20; confirm the Hammer menu in your installed build.
What must be discovered to unlock it?
The cited database lists Greydwarf Eye, Grausten, Molten Core and the Stonecutter. Check your actual recipe menu because world settings or later patches may change the gates.
If I use a Stone Portal at one end, can I carry metal back through the wooden one?
Do not assume so. The community references describe the departure portal as determining the exception, so test the return by entering the wooden endpoint or use a compatible route.
Does the material tool know my inventory?
No. It subtracts only the stock you enter locally in the page and does not inspect or upload your character, world or save.
