Separate a pairing failure from a cargo refusal
A portal that does not connect and a portal that refuses your inventory are different failure states. Matching tags determine the link; the departure portal’s item rule and the world’s portal modifier determine whether a loaded trip is allowed. Changing the tag will not make a normal portal accept prohibited metal, and dropping metal will not repair a mismatched tag.
For 1.0.21, the cited community references describe tags as exact and case-sensitive. A tag such as `Swamp` is not safely interchangeable with `swamp`. Keep each destination label short, compare both displayed tags character by character, and use the active portal interface rather than a map marker as the source of truth.
- Read the tag at the home portal and the remote portal. Retype the same short label at both ends, preserving capitalization and punctuation.
- If the tag matches but the portal remains unpaired, check whether a different portal already uses that name; temporarily use a unique test tag on the intended pair.
- If the link is active but travel is refused, inspect carried items for the in-game crossed-out portal indicator and note the world’s portal modifier.
- Test the planned journey in both directions. The outbound portal and the return portal can have different cargo permissions when one end is a Stone Portal.
- If a modded or hosted world disagrees with the guide, record its build, world rule, mod list and exact portal type before changing more settings.

Why a Stone-to-wood pair can be one-way for metal
The 1.0.21 portal reference says a Stone Portal permits restricted items when departing from it; the world-mechanics reference says a normal wooden portal blocks ores, scraps and metal bars, while the Stone Portal permits them. Read that as a rule on each departure, not as a property granted to the entire pair.
Example: you stand at a Stone Portal carrying ore and enter it; the linked wooden portal can be the arrival. For the return, you now enter the wooden portal. Under standard rules it can reject the same restricted cargo. The safer plan is a compatible departure portal at each end, or a world setting that allows the cargo, or leave/transport that load by a non-portal route. Confirm the active world rule before building around this example.
| World rule and departure | Restricted cargo | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard rules · wooden portal | Normally refused | Remove items marked as blocked or use a permitted departure route |
| Standard rules · Stone Portal | Permitted by the cited 1.0.21 references | Stone Portal must be the portal you enter for that leg |
| Portal-items modifier | The rule is changed by the world setting | Read the saved world modifier; do not assume standard restrictions |
| No-portals modifier | No portal route | Use a different travel plan; changing tags cannot restore disabled portals |

A minimal reproducible check
Do not dismantle a network before you identify the failing layer. Use one intended pair, a unique tag, and a non-restricted test load first. Only after the empty/light-load link is established should you test the restricted cargo rule. This makes the observation useful to a co-op host or guide correction without claiming an undocumented fix.
This check does not diagnose line of sight, structural damage, server desync, mod conflicts or every special-item exception. If the portal says it is linked but still denies a particular item, trust the in-game message and report the precise item name and departure portal type.

Make the next correction report actionable
If the two tagged endpoints are paired but a particular cargo item behaves differently, send the exact item name, installed build, platform, world portal modifier and the type of portal you entered for each leg. Distinguish items held by the character from anything stored in a cart or container.
Use the site contribution form to send a reproducible observation. A report is a proposal for editorial review, not an automatic public comment or a promise that GamerWin has independently repeated the result.
- Record each endpoint type and exact tag.
- Record the displayed world portal rule and any mod/server differences.
- Test one direction at a time, changing only cargo or departure endpoint between checks.
- Remove personal identifiers from screenshots and grant publication permission only if you want the report credited.

Before you play
- Compare the complete tags, including case; do not diagnose cargo restrictions as a tag fault.
- Check the active world portal modifier before relying on standard behavior.
- Evaluate each trip using the portal you enter, not only the portal at the destination.
- Use the in-game blocked-item icon for individual cargo exceptions.
- Keep the exact build, world rule, portal types and item name in any reproducible report.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Stone Portal connect to a wooden Portal?
The cited references describe portals as tag-linked and the Stone Portal as allowing restricted cargo on departure. Verify the actual pair in your 1.0.21-or-later world; a linked pair does not mean identical cargo rules in both directions.
Why can I go out with ore but not return?
Under standard rules, the source reports that the departure portal controls the exception. If you departed from a Stone Portal and return by entering a wooden portal, the return leg can be refused.
Do portal labels ignore capitalization?
The cited community references describe tags as case-sensitive. Compare the exact entered tags and test with a unique label; do not rely only on the map marker’s appearance.
Is the portal checker an in-game test?
No. It applies the selected reference rules to your stated world setting and endpoint types; it cannot inspect your save, mods, server or item inventory.

First publication: separated link/tag troubleshooting from cargo refusal and documented why a mixed Stone/wood pair may behave differently on the return leg. Added a local-input checker; it does not read or upload a save.
