Read what actually raises the displayed number
Stunlock describes Gear Level as equipment-based. More enemy kills alone will not fill a hidden XP bar. A boss can seem impossible when one low-tier piece or missing jewelry slot lowers the currently worn set. Start by recording the displayed number and every equipped slot rather than farming materials with no recipe target.
Spells and vampire powers can improve combat but the publisher says they do not directly raise Gear Level. This distinction matters: a strong spell may help a fight while leaving the displayed recommended-level gap unchanged. The first job is to find which gear piece can actually be replaced.
- Read your current Gear Level and the target V Blood boss's recommended level. Do not assume the recommendation is a mandatory lockout.
- Inspect every worn weapon, armor and jewelry slot; note empty or older pieces.
- At the appropriate Research Desk, Study or Atheneum, check whether a stronger or Merciless recipe is already unlockable with your current research resources.
- Check the Journal and lower-level V Blood targets for missing station or recipe unlocks; then inspect that station's input requirements.
- Craft and equip one upgrade, re-read the displayed Gear Level, and only then decide whether the next boss is an appropriate attempt.

Match a plateau to a dependency
The publisher lists research, drops, merchants and V Blood kills as possible routes to stronger equipment. They are not interchangeable shortcuts: buying a blueprint does not supply refined materials, and building a station does not necessarily unlock every recipe in it. Treat each route as a distinct gate to verify in your own Journal and crafting UI.
On a full-loot PvP server, equipment can be acquired or lost through players. This article does not prescribe PvP looting as an ordinary solo or PvE path. Focus on the persistent recipe-and-crafting chain if you want a repeatable upgrade.
| What you find | First missing gate | Action to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One slot empty or old | Worn loadout | Equip the strongest available piece and read the new number |
| Station has no next recipe | Research or V Blood unlock | Inspect research tiers and earlier target rewards |
| Recipe unlocked, cannot craft | Refined material or station | Trace the recipe input back one production step |
| Crafted piece, number unchanged | Item not equipped or not an upgrade | Compare worn and inventory items by actual level |

Worked example: a recipe is not a level
Illustrative sequence, not a tested save: a player sees a Merciless weapon recipe at a research station and assumes the Gear Level has risen. The character still wears the previous weapon, so the display stays unchanged. After gathering the required materials, crafting and equipping the upgraded weapon, the player rechecks the number. If it remains unchanged, the next comparison is the weapon's actual level and other worn slots, not a claim that the boss is bugged.
Do not publish a fixed 'best level' from this example. Item values and boss recommendations depend on your installed build. The reproducible result is the before/after Gear Level on the same loadout with one changed piece.

Record a correction that can be checked
For a genuinely stuck progression report, include game build, server mode, boss name and recommendation, every worn slot, research station, candidate recipe and displayed number before and after equipping. That distinguishes a missing unlock from a UI issue or server modification.
If you are dying to sunlight while gathering an upgrade, use the separate daylight-route guide. Better gear may extend survival through Sun Resistance, but the official support article says it does not make you immune to exposure.

Frequently asked questions
Can I grind enemy kills to level up?
Not through a standard character XP track. Stunlock describes progression through the equipment you wear and the recipes or stations you unlock.
Do new spells directly raise Gear Level?
The publisher says no. They can improve combat effectiveness, but inspect and equip stronger gear to change the displayed level.
