Why a memorized timer is unsafe
Stunlock's daylight survival article and its separate cycle article give incompatible real-time daytime lengths for an 18-minute cycle. The latter also explains that server administrators can change total cycle length and daylight share. This guide does not silently choose one number. The current in-game clock, server configuration and visible warning are the operational evidence for your run.
Shade from trees, rocks, walls and buildings can block sunlight, but the publisher warns that the shadow moves. Before leaving a resource node, look for the next shaded stopping point and a second fallback if that shadow shifts while you are fighting or loading inventory.
- At the start of the trip, note the clock and identify a route with multiple shaded waypoints rather than one long open shortcut.
- Before entering an open field or bridge, inspect the current light and the distance to the next cover; turn back if the route has no safe stop.
- If sunrise or the visual warning starts, abandon a nonessential fight and move to a cliff, ruin, building or reliable shaded side of terrain.
- At a castle, verify a Mist Brazier has Bones and visibly protects the work area; later, a complete roof offers a different protection route.
- After reaching safety, compare the actual clock and safe return distance. Adjust your next trip instead of using a generic real-time duration.

Choose the right refuge
A shadow is useful for a short outdoor pause; it is not an all-day shelter because the sun angle changes. A brazier protects its covered area only while fueled, according to Stunlock. A completed roof is more dependable for indoor work, but its construction state matters—standing between unfinished walls is not proof of shade.
Sun Resistance can delay the onset of damage, according to the publisher's progression page, yet it does not grant immunity. Treat resistance as a margin for reaching cover, not permission to plan a long daylight crossing.
| Situation | Least risky first move | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Near sunrise in open terrain | Return toward nearby shade | Clock and next covered waypoint |
| Tree shade while inventory is full | Move before the shadow shifts | Actual sun angle and alternate cover |
| Castle courtyard still burns | Check brazier or roof | Bones, active mist and protected footprint |
| High Sun Resistance | Use it only as an escape buffer | Warning and health, not a presumed immunity |

Worked example: take the shaded detour
Illustrative planning case, not a timed gameplay test: a vampire finishes mining just before the clock approaches sunrise. The shortest line home crosses an exposed plain; a longer route follows cliff shade and a ruin. Because the official timing pages conflict and a custom server may use a different cycle, the player chooses the shaded route and checks the clock at each waypoint rather than calculating a guaranteed 6-minute sprint.
If the shade is no longer present on arrival, the decision changes: retreat to the previous covered point or enter a nearby building. The guide's value is in the fallback decision, not a promise that a particular tree always blocks the sun.

Keep a usable trip note
Record server day-length settings if available, departure and warning clock values, the route's cover points and whether the brazier was fueled. This will improve the next trip on your specific server without pretending that another server shares the same timing.
For gear progression while waiting through daylight, the related guide traces equipment slots, research and V Blood unlocks rather than suggesting idle XP farming.

- Use the in-game clock, not a fixed web timer.
- Plan more than one shade waypoint.
- Check brazier fuel or complete roof at base.
- Treat Sun Resistance as margin, not immunity.
Frequently asked questions
How many real-time minutes is the sun out?
Stunlock's support pages conflict, and server settings vary. Read the current server's clock and configuration instead of trusting a universal minute count.
Will a Mist Brazier always protect my courtyard?
Only its covered area while fueled. Check active mist and Bones, and remember that a complete roof is a separate protection method.
Sources & revision notes
Editorial revision: September 25, 2026. Source notes give the scope of each reference; the revision date is not a gameplay test date. Official documentation describes the publisher's system; community sources can contain errors. Use your installed game's own descriptions when they disagree.
- Stunlock Studios: Manage sunlight exposure (Official)
Publisher support article checked September 25, 2026 for moving shade, Mist Brazier and roofs. Its 12-minute daytime figure conflicts with the publisher's separate cycle article, so this guide does not use it.
- Stunlock Studios: How long is the sun out? (Official)
Publisher support article checked September 25, 2026; Medium timing table disagrees with its other sunlight article. Server settings also change timing. Use the in-game clock and warning, not an asserted universal duration.
- Stunlock Studios: How do I level up? (Official)
Publisher support article checked September 25, 2026 for equipment-based progression and V Blood recipe gates. Its item examples are illustrative, not a current-build tier list.
Published a shaded-route decision guide and explicitly reconciled contradictory official daylight durations by deferring to the player's server clock.
