The irreversible planning point
Nintendo describes two files in the Switch 2 Edition: one can continue an existing journey and a second can start another. Its official feature page specifically warns that the second saved-data file cannot be transferred to the original Nintendo Switch version to play. This is an edition boundary, not a claim that all save transfer between Switch and Switch 2 is impossible.
- Write down which console/edition created the file and which edition you need to keep using it.
- If the file is the Switch 2 Edition's extra second slot and an original Switch must open it later, stop: Nintendo says that route is unsupported.
- If it is your existing main file, read Nintendo's current Switch 2 Edition and system-transfer instructions for that exact source/destination before confirming a transfer.
- Do not delete a user, initialize a console, or restore a backup as a trial; these actions can remove or replace data.

Separate an edition question from a backup question
A cloud backup is not the same operation as the Switch 2 Edition's second slot or a console-to-console system transfer. Nintendo says Save Data Cloud support is title-specific and its download replaces the local save. Its general support page also notes console-family limits for Nintendo Switch 2 software data. Check the TotK entry and backup time on the actual user and console before deciding a restore is safe.
- On the console, open the software options for the correct TotK user and look for Save Data Cloud; do not assume eligibility from another game's cloud setting.
- Compare the displayed backup time with the last known good play session and the file you want to preserve.
- If the current console has newer progress than the cloud copy, do not download the older copy until you understand that replacement risk.
- If the title does not show the expected cloud option, use Nintendo's transfer/support route rather than treating a missing backup as proof the save is corrupt.

Choose the next check by your goal
| Goal | Check first | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Continue the existing main adventure on Switch 2 | Confirm edition, Nintendo user, and Nintendo's transfer instructions | Pause before any overwrite if the source console has newer progress |
| Start a separate second adventure on Switch 2 Edition | Confirm the second-slot prompt and destination edition | Do not plan to move that second file back to original Switch |
| Recover a missing or unreadable file | Correct user, software/system update, corrupt-data check, then backup status | Do not download a cloud backup until its timestamp and overwrite effect are understood |

Limits and evidence
Nintendo's support instructions are the authority for transfer and recovery steps. The planner below uses only the choices you enter; it cannot inspect a console or confirm a file's origin, cloud eligibility, backup timestamp or integrity. Community reports can help describe symptoms but may refer to a different edition or update.

Before you play
- I identified the exact TotK edition and console for the source file.
- I checked which user owns the file and whether it is the main or Switch 2 Edition second slot.
- I recorded the cloud-backup timestamp before considering any download.
- I paused before an action that could overwrite, delete or strand progress.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Switch 2 Edition's second save move back to original Switch?
Nintendo explicitly says the second file created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Switch version to play.
Does this guide verify my cloud backup?
No. It cannot access a console, user account, save file or backup timestamp; check these in Nintendo's own system UI.
