Do not restore first
A missing title entry, wrong user, software update issue and damaged save are different problems. Nintendo's support order begins with system/software maintenance and the correct user; cloud restore is conditional. Save Data Cloud download is not a harmless preview because Nintendo warns it replaces the local file.
- Stop launching or saving under a different user just to see whether the file appears.
- Record the console model, TotK edition, displayed software version, user profile and the exact on-screen message.
- If a second Switch user may own the progress, select that user and check the title before changing users, transferring data or deleting profiles.
- Do not delete a Nintendo user: Nintendo warns save data associated with a deleted user cannot be recovered.

Follow Nintendo's diagnostic sequence
Nintendo's TotK update page lists the supported Switch-family systems and update history. The number on the player's console is authoritative for their installation; a web page's dated entry should not be presented as a live version detector.
- Check the console's System Update page.
- If the system is current, restart the console using Nintendo's documented restart path.
- Highlight TotK without launching it, open its software menu, and use Software Update → Via the Internet; note the version shown under the title.
- Use System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software → Tears of the Kingdom → Check for Corrupt Data.
- If no corruption is reported, check whether the issue appears with another application before changing or initializing system data.

Cloud restore is a last, evidence-based branch
| What the console shows | Safer next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TotK has no Save Data Cloud option | Do not assume a backup; review Nintendo's system-transfer/support options | Nintendo says support is software-specific |
| A backup exists but is older than local progress | Keep the console's local copy; do not download yet | Nintendo says cloud download replaces local data |
| Backup is for the correct user and is newer/known-good | Read Nintendo's download steps and verify edition/console compatibility before confirming | A Switch 2 software save cannot be downloaded by the Switch family |
| Save remains missing/corrupt after checks | Use Nintendo support/service, including the console and game card where requested | The local checklist cannot repair hardware or reconstruct a save |

Version and edition boundary
Nintendo's update history lists the February 17, 2026 TotK update and says Switch 2 Edition owners need that update for added features/content. That page is a dated record, not proof that a particular console has installed it. The Switch 2 Edition's second save slot also has a one-way limit back to original Switch, so identify the edition before following generic cloud or transfer steps.

Limits and player discussion
This is a source-based recovery order, not a tested fix. External player discussions are anecdotal and may mix up Switch 1 and Switch 2 Edition saves. Share the edition, console, user count and exact message—but never post account credentials or private save data.

Before you play
- I checked the correct user before selecting a backup.
- I recorded the current software version and exact symptom.
- I used Nintendo's corrupt-data check before considering cloud restore.
- I compared local progress, backup timestamp, edition and destination console before any overwrite.
Frequently asked questions
Should I download the cloud save to see if it fixes the issue?
Not until you confirm the title supports Save Data Cloud for that user and understand that downloading replaces local save data.
Can this checklist inspect a cloud backup or restore it?
No. It only displays guidance from your selections in this tab; nothing connects to Nintendo or reads your console.
