Before committing to a cycle
Last Variable adds an underground base, changing surface opportunities and a Cryosleep Chamber. The publisher describes the surface interval as brief and says cryosleep lets Jan witness longer-term effects; it does not publish an exact number of minutes or a universal cycle template in the cited overview.
- Read the current in-game objective and surface/crew warnings; do not use a fixed outside timer as a substitute.
- Choose the next surface task from your own map, objective markers and resources. Record what remains rather than trying to maximize an undocumented route.
- If terrain work is planned, inspect its current warning: the publisher says terraforming can trigger earthquakes, radiation and other hazards.
- Before cryosleep, open each Field Lab visible in your save and confirm its current assignment in the interface.
- Check crew readiness and any urgent status warning before advancing time; the publisher notes readiness can decline across cycles.
- On waking, compare the actual outcome with your note and re-check the transformed surface before repeating the plan.

Distinguish known mechanics from unanswered numbers
Official marketing and update text establish that Field Labs support research while Jan is in cryosleep and that cooldowns open brief surface windows. They do not tell us how many tasks fit, a guaranteed output per sleep, or the ideal number of specialists. Treat those as in-save observations, not transferable constants.
| Question | Supported here | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Can Alters keep research active while Jan sleeps? | The official description says Field Labs allow ongoing research during cryosleep | A guaranteed completion time, yield, or assignment priority |
| Does the surface remain unchanged after each cooldown? | The publisher says cooldowns expose a dramatically transformed world | That every tile, resource or hazard changes in the same way |
| Is cryosleep consequence-free for the crew? | The store description says increasingly vicious cycles wear down crew readiness | A fixed amount of readiness loss per cycle |
| Can terraforming cause hazards? | The official description names earthquakes and radiation waves among consequences | A precise probability or hazard schedule |

Worked hand-off example
Illustrative checklist, not a tested strategy: before sleeping, a player notes one Field Lab assignment by its exact in-game name, marks crew readiness as not yet checked, and records an active terraforming warning. The useful action is to verify those three items in the interface before committing, then compare actual state after waking. This does not predict how much research will finish or whether the hazard will occur.

Use player discussions carefully
Steam Discussions can reveal what other players are asking about, but those posts are not official rules and may describe earlier builds or different story states. Compare the author's build, phase and exact warning with your own. Do not treat a community route, cycle count or assignment as a verified optimum unless it is independently supported by current game documentation.

Before you play
- Current phase selected from the player's own interface.
- Surface goals and warnings checked before terrain changes.
- Field Lab assignments confirmed by their in-game names.
- Crew readiness checked rather than assumed unchanged.
- After waking, actual state recorded instead of relying on predicted output.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a surface window?
The official description calls it brief but does not give an exact duration here. Use the timer/objective state shown in your own game.
Will this tool tell me which Alter or research task is optimal?
No. It formats reminders from your selections and does not model task duration, output, crew traits or the save.
Can I skip crew checks before cryosleep?
The official listing warns that repeated cycles can wear down readiness. Check the status indicators in your own save rather than assuming there is no effect.

11 bit studios says the story can be selected from the main menu before or after the main scenario; it continues Jan Scientist after the base-game events. The same announcement describes terrain changes, hazards, underground construction, Cryosleep, Field Labs, and a spoiler-labeled explanation of the connecting ending.
