Last Variable readiness check

These answers stay in this tab and reset on reload. The check cannot see a store library, account, platform install, or save.

not owned

The menu path is documented, but this checklist cannot verify a purchase or license.

  • If you already own the DLC, check the same platform/account and whether the installed game has finished updating.
  • If you do not own it, stop here; a missing menu entry is not evidence of a broken save.

Read the developer's Last Variable announcement

Separate ownership, menu access, and story order

These are three different questions. Steam's official DLC listing says the base game is required. The developer's launch announcement says the expansion is selected as a new story from the main menu and can be started before or after the main scenario. That does not prove that a particular account owns or installed the DLC, or that another platform uses identical menu wording.

  1. Confirm The Alters base game is available on the platform/account where you intend to play; Steam lists it as a requirement for this DLC.
  2. Check the platform store/library for Last Variable and let any game update finish. This page cannot see entitlements or downloads.
  3. If following the cited Steam instructions, return to the main menu and look for Last Variable as a new story.
  4. Choose whether you want the expansion's connection to the base story explained before opening any linked ending guide.
  5. If the menu entry is missing despite confirmed ownership and an updated install, record the platform, store, displayed build and exact menu state before seeking official support.

Use this spoiler decision table

The publisher says it did not declare one base-game ending the only correct interpretation, while Last Variable continues one of them. The announcement also publishes a spoiler-marked guide for connecting that ending. You can preserve your own interpretation by separating access instructions from that explanation.

A quick example without a story spoiler

Suppose you own the base game and expansion but have not finished the main story. The documented choice is still available from the main menu according to the announcement; the spoiler-safe choice is not to open the publisher's linked ending explanation. This is a reading/navigation recommendation, not a claim that starting early changes or preserves a save.

If access still does not appear

Compare the store platform and install you are actually using, then capture the menu state and displayed build. A forum thread from another player can suggest a question to investigate, but may describe another platform or patch. Do not delete or overwrite a save to test DLC visibility.

Before you play

  • Base game requirement checked on the intended platform/account.
  • Last Variable availability and installed update checked in that platform's library.
  • Steam menu guidance treated as Steam-specific rather than guaranteed console UI.
  • Spoiler preference recorded before opening the publisher's ending guide.
  • No purchase, account or save inspection claimed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to finish The Alters before Last Variable?

The developer says the new story can be selected before or after the main scenario. It follows Jan Scientist after the base-game events, so story preference is separate from menu access.

Does this checklist confirm that I own the DLC?

No. It only uses your selections in this browser tab and cannot access Steam or another platform account.

Will the DLC reveal the ending connection?

The developer says it continues one base-game ending and marks its connection guide as spoilers. Avoid that guide if you want to stay spoiler-free.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 6, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. Official Last Variable launch and gameplay overview (Official)

11 bit studios says the story can be selected from the main menu before or after the main scenario; it continues Jan Scientist after the base-game events. The same announcement describes terrain changes, hazards, underground construction, Cryosleep, Field Labs, and a spoiler-labeled explanation of the connecting ending.

  2. The Alters: Last Variable official Steam listing (Official)

Publisher store description and Steam platform scope. It states the DLC requires the base game, describes nine arenas, changing surface windows, Cryosleep, crew readiness and Field Lab assignments. It is not a cycle-by-cycle strategy guide.

  3. The Alters official base-game listing (Official)

Publisher description identifies the base game as a single-player survival/base-management story. Store availability and edition ownership can vary by platform; this page does not verify a reader's license.

  4. The Alters Steam Discussions (Community)

External player-authored discussions, not verified advice or official support. Posts may refer to another patch, platform or story state.
