Verify the extra oxygen is actually available

The indexed Standard O₂ Tank entry says the tank adds 30 units, for 75 total when equipped, and must refill in breathable air. A tank sitting in inventory is not the same as one equipped. Check the oxygen display after equipping and surfacing before attempting a longer route.

The same community reference notes that a newly crafted tank can be empty until exposed to breathable air. If the display does not match the expected increase, return to the Lifepod or surface, equip the item and wait for the fill rather than assuming the item is defective.

  1. At the Lifepod Fabricator, inspect and craft the Standard O₂ Tank when its in-game materials are available.
  2. Equip it in the tank slot and refill at the surface or Lifepod; read the resulting maximum on your own HUD.
  3. Choose one nearby resource or scan target with an unobstructed return path. Avoid a cave or deep drop on the first route.
  4. Decide your turn-back oxygen before leaving the surface. Return early if terrain, depth or wildlife changes the route.
  5. After surfacing, compare the oxygen used with the time spent out and back; use that observed rate for the next dive.

Do not use the shallow-water rate at depth

The indexed Oxygen page describes oxygen consumption rising at greater depth before a Rebreather. That makes a flat seconds-to-surface calculation unsafe for a deep cave. The early route here stays in the Safe Shallows and treats any depth increase as a reason to shorten the outward leg.

Hardcore still requires oxygen but disables low-oxygen PDA warnings according to the mode reference. Players in Hardcore must set their own HUD threshold rather than waiting for an audio warning. Creative does not use the same survival constraint.

Worked example: split 75 units before entering water

Illustrative planning allocation, not a measured swim: if your HUD shows 75 units, budget no more than 20 for the outward leg, up to 35 for return and ascent, and 20 as an emergency reserve. The sum is 75. The unequal return budget accounts for a detour or slower navigation; it is a safety choice, not a prediction that the return will consume 35 units.

If you reach 55 units remaining on the outward leg, turn back on this example even if the resource is in sight. If depth or path uncertainty rises, turn back earlier. A second short dive after a refill is usually a clearer decision than gambling all remaining oxygen on one pickup.

Record the route that was actually safe for you

Save the game mode, installed version, depth band, starting capacity, turn-back point and oxygen on surfacing. This lets another player distinguish a missing tank from poor route planning. Avoid claiming a fixed travel radius; currents, terrain and player decisions alter it.

This article intentionally does not promise an exact material location or a guaranteed safe cave. The next progression problem is usually scanning useful fragments and fixing the Lifepod systems, which the related guide covers.

  • Oxygen refilled before departure.
  • Turn-back number chosen before entering a cave or deep area.
  • Return and emergency reserve preserved.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my new tank not giving me more oxygen?

Check the tank equipment slot and refill it in a breathable atmosphere. The indexed community entry says the bonus requires equipping and the tank may start empty.

Can I use the 75-unit example for deep water?

No. The cited oxygen reference describes greater consumption at depth. Use the installed HUD, shorten the dive and plan a safer return.
