Choose the destination before moving a stack
Repeatedly moving items without a destination makes it easy to confuse what the character carries with what the ship or outpost stores. Start with a short material list and a target location. Bethesda's inventory-management article covers the game's inventory and cargo interfaces; use the installed build's screen labels and remaining-capacity readouts because this guide does not assume a fixed number of cargo units.
- Write down the materials needed for the next build or crafting task, rather than taking every resource you own.
- Choose the destination for each group: personal carry for immediate use, ship cargo for transport, or an outpost store for materials meant to remain there.
- Before leaving a location, open the destination container and verify the items are present there; do not rely on a remembered transfer animation.
- At the destination, confirm the receiving inventory and available capacity before moving the next batch.

Treat each transfer as a two-sided check
A transfer has a source and a destination. Checking only that an item disappeared from one list is not enough: the destination may be full, the wrong container may be selected, or the item may remain in another inventory category. Use the interface's displayed counts and capacity after each meaningful batch.
| Before transfer | After transfer | If the result differs |
|---|---|---|
| Record item name and visible quantity in the source inventory | Check the same item and quantity in the intended destination | Reopen the source/destination screens before retrying |
| Read the destination's current capacity indicator | Confirm the capacity indicator changes as expected | Move a smaller batch or free space; don't assume a transfer succeeded |
| Separate resources needed now from reserve stock | Keep the reserve in its chosen store | Avoid moving unrelated items while diagnosing a missing stack |

Worked example: prepare for an outpost build
Suppose your next task is to place a beacon, one extractor, a power source, and a storage structure. Rather than claim exact universal costs here, copy the quantities from your current build menu or crafting requirements. The planner is a sequence: list those quantities, check the source inventory, load the transport container only with the deficit, then verify delivery before building.
- Open the build or crafting screen and note the material names and quantities shown by your installed version.
- Compare those requirements with the stock at the intended source; calculate only the shortfall yourself or in a notes app.
- Move that shortfall into the ship's available cargo using the current UI, checking its capacity indicator.
- At the destination, confirm each material arrived in the intended inventory/store before starting construction.
- If the requirement screen or stock changed after an update, use the new in-game value rather than an older online list.

When cargo still looks wrong
Bethesda's support reference does not establish that a single fixed cargo number applies to every ship, upgrade, or configuration. This guide therefore avoids capacity predictions. If an item seems missing, pause additional transfers and identify the exact source and destination screens before filing a report or asking other players.
| Symptom | Useful evidence to gather | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo is full sooner than expected | Ship configuration, displayed capacity and currently occupied amount | Compare the live readout and remove only items you can identify |
| A resource is absent at the destination | Item name, source screen, destination screen, and displayed quantities | Check other inventories/containers before repeating the transfer |
| Transfer option differs from a guide | Platform, installed game build, selected menu and exact prompt | Follow the current UI and check Bethesda Support before applying old steps |
| A community post suggests a fix | Post date, platform/build, mods, and whether the steps match your UI | Treat it as an unverified player report, not official confirmation |

Before you play
- I know the destination for each group of materials.
- I copied requirements from my installed build rather than an old fixed-cost list.
- I checked the destination's displayed remaining capacity.
- I verified the item and quantity at the destination after transfer.
- I recorded platform/build and exact UI labels if the result did not match.
Frequently asked questions
Can this guide tell me my ship's remaining cargo capacity?
No. It does not inspect your ship or save; use the current cargo screen and your ship's actual configuration.
Should I move every resource onto the ship before building?
Usually plan around the specific shortfall for the task. Keeping unrelated reserve stock in its intended store reduces unnecessary transfers.
Are player forum instructions authoritative?
No. Steam discussions are player-run and may be dated, platform-specific, or modded. Compare the post's build and UI with Bethesda's support page and your game.
