Confirm the resource at the exact site
An outpost can only extract a resource that the chosen site can provide. A broad planet scan is not the same as confirming that a specific extractor is placed over a valid deposit within the outpost's usable area. Bethesda's getting-started article describes surveying a planet and using the outpost beacon as part of the setup; use the live scanner and build preview as the authoritative checks.
- Use the planet view to identify the resource you intend to collect, then land and use the scanner at the candidate location.
- Place or inspect the beacon and check the resource indicators for that exact outpost site; do not infer a deposit from a nearby landing zone or another outpost.
- Open the extractor's build preview and confirm it reports the intended resource before committing materials.
- If the resource is absent or the extractor cannot be placed over it, move the site or choose another survey location rather than repeatedly rebuilding the same extractor.

Trace the setup in dependency order
Bethesda's getting-started steps are unusually direct: place an extractor over a resource available under the outpost, place a power source, then link that generator to the extractor. Diagnose those documented prerequisites before changing storage or rebuilding. The article does not establish a conveyor-belt requirement for a basic extractor, so do not add one solely because another factory game uses belts.
| Checkpoint | What to verify in your game | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Resource | Planet scan and site show the intended resource; extractor preview matches | Resurvey or reposition; do not infer a deposit from a different landing area |
| Beacon area | The extractor is placed within the outpost formed by its beacon | Recheck the site and placement preview |
| Power source | A generator suitable for the current site is placed | Check the live power display and the current environment before selecting a source |
| Direct power link | The generator is linked directly to the extractor; Bethesda describes the red-line link action | Recreate/inspect that specific connection in build mode |
| Status / storage | Read the extractor and any relevant storage status shown by your build | Only investigate capacity or storage transfer if the interface indicates it; record the exact message |

Use a one-change test, not a rebuild
Bethesda's outpost-management tips recommend saving before editing an outpost. A small reversible check is safer than dismantling a working chain while troubleshooting. The official pages do not provide a guaranteed universal production rate for every planet, structure, bonus, or patch; compare the status shown by your own outpost.
- Make a manual save before editing, especially if you are about to move or replace structures.
- Write down the extractor's displayed status and the resource/storage setup before changing anything.
- Correct one suspected dependency—such as site position, a visibly missing power connection, or a full output store—then wait for the interface to update.
- If the status changes, record the result. If not, restore the prior setup if appropriate and move to the next checkpoint instead of stacking speculative changes.

Worked diagnosis and limits
Example: your scanner identifies iron at the chosen site, the extractor preview names iron, but it remains idle. First inspect the direct generator-to-extractor power link Bethesda documents. If it is present, compare the generator and extractor status in the live UI and check storage only if a capacity/transfer warning appears. Record the exact status and installed build before asking other players; a discussion post is not proof that the same issue affects your build.
| Observation | Next diagnostic step | Do not conclude yet |
|---|---|---|
| Extractor preview lacks intended resource | Resurvey or move the extractor/site | That a nearby planet scan proves the exact location has the deposit |
| Correct resource, generator absent | Place an appropriate power source and inspect the live readout | That a particular generator is best on every planet |
| Generator placed, no direct link | Use build mode to link generator and extractor as Bethesda describes | That wiring/connection is automatic |
| Power link appears valid, status still idle | Record the exact UI status; inspect any storage warning and reproduce one step at a time | That the cause is definitely a full store or a known bug |
| All visible checks pass | Include platform/build and exact steps in a support or discussion post | That an anecdotal forum workaround is a confirmed universal fix |

Before you play
- I verified the intended resource at the outpost site.
- The extractor is placed over the resource within the beacon's outpost area.
- I verified an appropriate generator is placed and directly linked to the extractor.
- I checked storage only if the live UI indicates a storage/capacity problem.
- I saved before editing and recorded the platform/build and exact status if still unresolved.
Frequently asked questions
Should I demolish and rebuild the extractor first?
Not yet. Confirm the deposit, site boundary, power and output path first; save before making edits.
Does this checklist verify my outpost or save?
No. It is a reader-operated diagnostic sequence. It cannot access the game, save, planet scan, power network, or production status.
Is the stated production rate guaranteed for every Starfield build?
No. This guide gives no universal rate; read the installed game's current structure and outpost status displays.
