Count mouths and days before buying a second silo
Barn and coop animals normally eat one portion each per feeding day; the cited Animals page excludes pets and horses and says a newly arrived animal does not require food that same day. Winter animals stay indoors, so the example uses hay rather than promising fresh grass. If your population changes during the season, calculate each group's remaining feeding days separately.
The Silo page describes 26 hay per animal for a standard Winter, excluding the Festival of Ice and Feast of the Winter Star. This is a source-based planning assumption, not a guarantee about modified calendars or events. Twenty-six is not the rule for every other season or every festival: the Animals page lists exceptions for some newer festivals.
| Fixed animal count | 26-day hay target | Compared with one empty 240-capacity silo |
|---|---|---|
| 4 animals | 104 hay | Fits if filled with at least 104 |
| 9 animals | 234 hay | Fits with 6 capacity left |
| 10 animals | 260 hay | 20 above one silo's total capacity |
| 12 animals | 312 hay | 72 above one silo's total capacity |

Turn the target into a stock and capacity plan
Illustrative case, not a recorded farm: 10 existing animals × 26 feeding days = 260 hay. Assume no additional hay on feeding benches, in chests or in inventory. One fully filled silo then holds 240, leaving 20 to source or feed separately. If that silo currently holds only 180, the immediate gap to the total plan is 80, but its free silo space is only 60. If there is already hay on a bench or in a chest, count it once and recalculate rather than treating it as missing.
A second silo adds another 240 capacity, not 240 hay. The Wiki also describes keeping hay in a chest and transferring it to silo storage when there is room. This works only when you actually have a means to acquire or withdraw the hay and can refill the silo before the feeding bench needs it. In a manually fed building, hay in inventory can also be placed directly on the bench without routing it through the silo.
| Ledger item | Calculation | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Target for 10 animals | 10 × 26 | 260 hay total |
| Existing silo stock; no other hay | 180 | 80 short of total target |
| Free capacity in that silo | 240 − 180 | 60 hay can be added now |
| Still outside that one-silo capacity | 260 − 240 | 20 hay needs separate feeding, a later refill or more capacity |

Verify that hay reaches the right bench
A basic coop or barn uses a hay hopper and a feeding bench: use the hopper to take hay, then place enough on empty bench positions for the animals. A deluxe building has an autofeeder that distributes silo hay; it does not create feed if silo stock is empty. Check both the silo stock and actual bench instead of assuming that a full-looking building has been fed.
The Hay page notes that a hopper gives at most the number of empty bench positions and up to the number of animals in that building. In a deluxe building with a full auto-filled bench, the hopper may not dispense hay for chest storage. Do not rely on withdrawing an arbitrary quantity from a full bench.
- Count each barn and coop's animals and inspect its feeding bench.
- Check the silo's displayed combined inventory and capacity; note hay stored separately in a chest only once.
- For a non-deluxe building, use its hopper and place portions on empty bench slots; recheck the bench.
- For a deluxe building, check silo stock and the auto-filled bench, not the hopper alone.
- If stock is short, use a verified supply option and recheck before the next feeding day.

Harvesting grass is not a guaranteed fixed yield
Outside Winter, the community Hay reference describes a 50% hay chance per completely cleared ordinary grass tile with a basic scythe, provided there is unfilled silo capacity. This is a probability, not a promise that 40 cleared tiles always produce the missing 20 hay. Golden and Iridium Scythes have different documented chances; blue grass and Winter have different yield rules.
Hay from grass is added to available silos, while hay obtained from harvested wheat is placed in inventory. A full silo stops the ordinary grass-to-silo method from filling beyond capacity. Clearing all grass can also remove a future fresh-food source, so inspect both the available space and the intended area before cutting.
| What happened | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Grass cleared but silo count did not rise | Completed silo, free capacity, scythe and random yield | Check capacity and total hay; do not treat one failed tile as proof of a bug |
| Hay in backpack but not in silo | Source and transfer step | Place it on a manual bench or move it into the silo when capacity is free |
| Hopper gives no hay | Silo inventory and empty feeding-bench positions | Inspect the bench; a full deluxe bench changes hopper withdrawal |
| Animals are hungry despite stored hay | Building bench, auto-feed and actual access | Place portions or restore the silo-to-bench supply |

Document the real result without risking a season
Before Winter, record your build, fixed animal count, actual silo and chest hay, bench state, and known upcoming festival dates. If the count or settings change, update the ledger. Observe the bench and stock during normal play; the 260-hay case is a calculation and was not tested in a GamerWin save.

- Count barn and coop animals separately from pets and horses.
- Use 26 feeding days only for the described ordinary Winter example.
- Distinguish silo capacity, stored hay and separate chest stock.
- Check each building's feeding bench and autofeeder.
- Recalculate after animal or calendar changes.
Frequently asked questions
Will ten animals fit a whole standard Winter in one full silo?
The source-based 26-day estimate is 260 hay, 20 more than one silo's 240 capacity. A later refill or extra capacity is needed under those assumptions.
Does a deluxe coop produce free hay?
No. Its autofeeder distributes stored silo hay; check inventory and the feeding bench.
Do hungry animals die immediately?
The cited Animals page says they do not die from lack of feed, but become upset and stop producing until feeding resumes; unfed babies do not grow that day.
