Count the days, not just the two-night label
The community-maintained Tools reference says the upgrade takes two days: after handing it in you wake without it the next morning, and the following morning it is ready to collect. You must still travel to the Blacksmith and pick it up; a ready notification is not the tool already in your inventory. The example assumes the counter is accessible on both hand-in and pickup days.
This is a proposed sequence, not an observed playthrough. The Blacksmith normally opens 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, but festivals and Clint's schedule can limit service. The Blacksmith page describes a post-restoration Friday closure; Clint's schedule lists a rain exception. Check the actual date and conditions rather than assuming every Friday is identical. On Winter 16 he leaves for the clinic at 10:30 am, so the normal afternoon window is not available.
| When | Action | Assumption to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Day 10 before hand-in | Water outdoor crops and any indoor crops manually | You still own the can and can reach the shop before closing |
| Day 10 during shop hours | Give the starter can, 5 Copper Bars and 2,000g to Clint | Copper upgrade is offered and you have its actual resources |
| Day 11 | Rain covers outdoor crops; address indoor crops separately | The forecast is correct and this is an ordinary rainy outdoor day |
| Day 12 | Visit the open Blacksmith, collect the can and water remaining crops | Pickup day is not a shop closure; you have time for the trip |

Check the crop coverage that rain does not provide
Rain normally waters crops outdoors, but the Watering Cans reference says indoor crops such as greenhouse plants and Garden Pots need separate watering. Sprinklers and retaining soil may already cover some tiles; count only coverage you actually have. Winter snow is not equivalent to rain for Winter Seeds, and special crops or modified worlds can differ.
For an immature crop, missing water stops growth for that day rather than killing the plant. That delay can still cause a seasonal crop to miss its last harvest, so check the harvest deadline rather than treating a dry day as free. If the coverage is uncertain, postpone the upgrade or make a specific backup plan.
- List all outdoor crops that still need water on the day the can will be away.
- Check tomorrow's TV forecast and separate outdoor rain coverage from indoor plots.
- Mark which crops your existing sprinklers actually reach; check any retaining soil in the save rather than assuming coverage.
- Check the planned pickup day against festival closures and a post-restoration Friday.
- If any required tile remains uncovered, water it another verified way or choose another hand-in day.

A closure changes the pickup, not the crafting price
Example: you hand in the can on Wednesday in a save where the Community Center is already restored. Two days later is Friday. If Clint's regular post-restoration Friday closure applies, the can can be ready but pickup waits until the next open day. His published schedule lists rain as an exception; confirm the day's conditions and other overrides. Check Saturday for a festival or another exception before relying on it, and plan both Thursday and Friday crop needs when pickup is uncertain.
A festival falling on the pickup date has the same practical risk: work may finish but access may be delayed. Do not infer that every festival closes the Blacksmith; the source lists exceptions. Year-one Green Rain and Clint's Desert Festival schedule can also affect counter availability. Forecasts may not predict every special event; actual weather and service availability decide the result.
| Condition | What changes | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Rain on the day without the can | Outdoor watering may be covered | Check indoor tiles and any remaining manual needs |
| Pickup day is a closed Friday after restoration | Collection waits for the next open day | Check the rain exception and include any extra day in the crop plan |
| Pickup day is a festival with shop closed | The ready tool remains inaccessible that day | Verify the festival and next opening |
| Mature single-harvest crop waiting to pick | It can remain unwatered unless attempting a giant crop | Separate it from immature, repeat-harvest and giant-crop plans |

Budget the copper upgrade and test the new control
The regular copper tool upgrade costs five Copper Bars and 2,000g. That is for upgrading the can, not a claim about ore you already possess, furnace time or the amount of money you will earn before closing. Count bars and gold actually in inventory before leaving the farm; the cheaper trash-can upgrade is a different menu item.
The copper can can water up to three tiles in a straight line when charged. The Wiki describes platform-specific controls: PC and console hold the tool action; mobile uses a tap, brief wait and drag. Verify the visible selection before releasing. This is a documented control, not a measured speed or energy-saving result.
- Check five finished Copper Bars and 2,000g; reserve them before choosing other purchases.
- Water the crops needed today before handing in the can.
- After pickup, choose a safe straight row. On PC or console, hold the tool action until the intended area is highlighted; on mobile, tap the nearest tile, wait briefly for the animation, then drag toward the farthest tile.
- Release when the desired tiles are highlighted, then verify the watered ground; change your position or check the controls for your installed version if it misses.

Record a reproducible plan
Write down the actual day, edition/build, forecast, shop closures, indoor crops and coverage. If you try the plan, record the result and pickup time. A screenshot of the forecast or crop layout may support a report, but the example above is not a GamerWin farm test.

Frequently asked questions
Is the can back in my inventory automatically after two days?
No. The documented upgrade becomes ready, but you must collect it while the Blacksmith is accessible.
Does rain cover my greenhouse crops?
No. The cited Watering Cans reference says greenhouse and indoor Garden Pot crops still need separate watering.
Will an unwatered immature crop die immediately?
No. The cited reference says it does not grow that day; a delayed harvest can still miss the end of a season.
