Separate the machine cost from its output

The Wiki lists a basic Furnace recipe of 20 Copper Ore and 25 Stone. Each Copper Bar then requires five more Copper Ore and one Coal, and takes 30 in-game minutes of processing. The machine ingredients are consumed when you craft it; they are not the first four finished bars.

A Copper Watering Can upgrade needs five finished bars and 2,000g. The table below assumes no existing Furnace, bars or coal, no other copper spending, and the ordinary recipe. Starting with one already-owned Furnace removes only the machine's 20-ore and 25-stone bill.

Get the recipe and verify your actual stock

The community Furnace page says Clint gives the blueprint in a cutscene after the player collects at least one Copper Ore; exit the farmhouse between 6:00 and 11:30 the following morning. It lists several sources for that first ore, including purchase or a fishing chest, rather than only mining. If the scene has not happened, check the ore collection and morning exit before assuming a crafting bug.

A Furnace can also be obtained as a specified bundle reward, so not every save needs to pay the 20-ore machine recipe. Count equipment and finished bars already accessible, then subtract those from the target without double counting ore inside a running batch.

  1. Check whether a Furnace already exists and whether its output is waiting to be collected.
  2. Inspect your Crafting tab for the Furnace recipe after the Clint scene.
  3. If needed, craft and place one Furnace using 20 Copper Ore and 25 Stone.
  4. Reserve five Copper Ore and one Coal for each still-missing bar.
  5. Keep 2,000g separate for the actual tool upgrade and verify Clint's availability.

Run one batch and read the failure point

With at least five Copper Ore and one Coal in inventory, select the ore and activate the Furnace. The coal is the fuel, not the item to load instead of the ore. When processing completes, collect the Copper Bar before loading the next batch. A basic Furnace takes one batch at a time; processing time is game time, not a promise of how long a player will take to gather resources or walk to Clint.

Do not break a Furnace while it is processing: the cited page warns that the item being smelted is deleted. If a batch does not start, identify whether the furnace is still busy, the ore stack has at least five, or coal is present, rather than spending scarce copper on a replacement machine.

Work an inventory example and a processing schedule

Illustrative case: you already have one Furnace, two Copper Bars, 11 Copper Ore and one Coal. You need three more bars, requiring 15 ore and three coal. Gather at least four more ore and two more coal. The 11 ore is enough for two batches but cannot fund all three, even though the one Coal can start the first. This is a stock calculation, not a recorded farm.

If the three missing batches are loaded sequentially into one available Furnace and each completed bar is collected immediately, three 30-minute processing intervals total 90 in-game minutes. Any delay between loading batches adds time; the example does not include gathering, walking, menus or shop hours. With no bars, five intervals total 150 in-game minutes under the same assumptions.

Plan the hand-in separately from the bar ledger

The bars do not upgrade the tool by themselves. Once the bar and gold budget is complete, plan when you can give Clint the Watering Can and retrieve it. Water today before hand-in and check tomorrow's weather and the pickup schedule; crops indoors and island weather require separate planning. Use the related watering-can guide for the date and crop-coverage choices.

If your installed recipe or timing differs, record the platform, build, item shown, fuel and actual output rather than replacing the formula with an unverified claim.

Before you play

  • Count an existing Furnace before budgeting a new one.
  • Reserve five Copper Ore and one Coal for each missing bar.
  • Collect finished bars before loading the next batch.
  • Keep five finished bars and 2,000g for the copper tool upgrade.
  • Plan the days without the Watering Can separately.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need 45 Copper Ore for five bars?

No. That total assumes crafting one Furnace from scratch as well as smelting all five bars. If a Furnace already exists, five batches need 25 ore and five coal.

Do I load Coal into the Furnace instead of ore?

Select the ore and activate the Furnace while Coal is available in inventory; each operation consumes one Coal.

How long do five bars take?

Five uninterrupted 30-minute processing intervals are 150 in-game minutes for one Furnace. Manual reloading and travel can add time.

Are five bars the whole Watering Can upgrade cost?

No. The Copper Watering Can upgrade also requires 2,000g and an accessible Blacksmith counter.
