Before answering Demetrius
The community Cave reference says the event becomes available after 25,000g in total earnings, not 25,000g currently held. Demetrius visits in the morning and offers fruit bats or mushrooms; the documented choice cannot be reversed. The same reference notes that his visit does not occur on a Green Rain day. Do not spend money or sell an item merely because you think the threshold is a cash balance.
First check what your farm actually needs: the Community Center route and its current bundle slots, a healing plan for mining, whether you have fruit trees or a mushroom log, and how often you intend to visit the cave. The two options are useful for different tasks; a universal 'best' answer would hide those tradeoffs.
- Check your total earnings, your game build and whether Demetrius has offered the decision.
- Look at the actual bundle screen if bundle completion matters, including standard or remixed choices.
- List your existing fruit-tree and mushroom sources and how much random delay you can accept.
- Choose the option that fits your next practical problem; treat the choice as permanent before confirming.
- Afterward, inspect the cave yourself and record its output rather than assuming the example below occurred.

Decide by bottleneck, not by an imagined payout
Fruit bats can leave different fruits overnight, including some fruit-tree crops and forage; the Wiki describes random spawns and says uncollected fruit remains in the cave. This can provide alternatives for the standard Artisan Bundle, but a desired item might not appear when needed. Uncollected items or placed objects reduce available spawning space.
The mushroom choice adds six boxes and, in the Wiki's 1.6 notes, a free Dehydrator. The boxes produce every second day and yield randomly selected mushroom types. A predictable collection interval is not a promise of six identical mushrooms or a complete set of rare ingredients on the first visit.
| Your problem | Option to consider | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Missing a fruit option and willing to wait | Bats | Random fruit is not a deadline guarantee; confirm your active bundle |
| Want a recurring mushroom supply for mining preparation | Mushrooms | Individual types are random; Life Elixir also needs its recipe |
| Already have a mushroom log and need fruit | Bats may fill a different gap | A log has its own inputs, timing and random output |
| Already grow fruit trees and value a cave collection routine | Mushrooms may fit better | The cave choice is not needed for every mushroom source |

Worked example: a missing bundle item is not a forecast
Suppose a standard Artisan Bundle has five distinct accepted contributions already placed, and the player needs one more of its eligible choices. If the player chooses bats and later finds an eligible fruit not already contributed, that fruit could fill the sixth slot. Until it actually appears, the example remains a plan: checking the cave on a particular day does not ensure that fruit is there.
If a different eligible Artisan item is already accessible, compare donating it with waiting for fruit instead of treating the cave choice as mandatory. This hypothetical inventory and decision are editorial examples, not a reported farm or speedrun.

Budget the Life Elixir separately
The cited Life Elixir reference lists its crafting recipe at Combat level 2 and requires one Red Mushroom, one Purple Mushroom, one Morel and one Chanterelle. For one batch, having three Red Mushrooms and one of each of the other three ingredients is sufficient; after crafting, two Red Mushrooms remain. Having four Red Mushrooms alone is not sufficient, because the four ingredients are different.
The mushroom cave can produce each required type, but the selection is random. The recipe can be unlocked separately and mushrooms also have other documented sources; choosing bats does not permanently remove the possibility of crafting the elixir. Check the actual crafting menu and inventory, and reserve healing before taking a difficult mine route.
| Inventory before one craft | Needed for one elixir | After crafting |
|---|---|---|
| Red Mushroom: 3 | 1 | 2 remain |
| Purple Mushroom: 1 | 1 | 0 remain |
| Morel: 1 | 1 | 0 remain |
| Chanterelle: 1 | 1 | 0 remain |

Use a fallback without treating it as the same cave
The community Mushroom Log reference describes a separate craft unlocked at Foraging level 4 using 10 Hardwood and 10 Moss. It produces mushrooms on its own schedule and nearby wild trees affect the result. It is an alternative source, not a switch that changes Demetrius's permanent cave selection, and it does not guarantee one chosen mushroom type.
A simple record helps compare your own farm without manufacturing evidence. Write the actual build, decision, desired item and collection results; if you have not collected an item, record it as missing rather than presenting the decision as a successful harvest.

Before you play
- Verify total earnings rather than only current gold.
- Treat the cave choice as permanent on an unmodded save.
- Check actual bundle slots and existing alternative sources.
- Separate random mushroom types from the Life Elixir recipe unlock.
- Record a real collection result instead of promising a timed drop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the cave from bats to mushrooms later?
The cited community reference says this is a permanent choice in the unmodded game. Mods and platform-specific behavior are outside this guide.
Do fruit bats guarantee an apple before a bundle deadline?
No. Fruit spawning and the item type are random; inspect what actually appears and retain another route if a deadline matters.
Can I make Life Elixir if I chose bats?
Yes, the cited crafting recipe does not require a mushroom cave; it requires Combat level 2 and the four listed mushroom types, which have other possible sources.
