Pick the mode from the official capacity matrix
Nintendo's support page separates solo online, 2–4 online, 5–10 online, local wireless and LAN. Private Battle is the flexible group mode; Salmon Run has a four-player cap per match. More than eight Private Battle participants means the extras spectate, not play.
| Your plan | Modes Nintendo lists | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Solo online | Regular, Anarchy Series/Open, Private Battle unavailable, Salmon Run | Private Battle needs a group |
| 2–4 online friends | Regular, Anarchy Open, Private Battle, Salmon Run | Anarchy Series is not listed for a friends group |
| 5–10 online | Private Battle only | Over eight: extra participants spectate |
| Local wireless | Private Battle or Salmon Run | Salmon Run max four players |
| Wired LAN | Private Battle or Salmon Run | Private Battle up to eight players plus spectators |

Use a compatible join route
- Count active players separately from spectators and decide whether each player is on their own Switch-family system; split-screen is not available.
- Choose online, local wireless, or wired LAN before opening a room. Use the planner to catch a mode/capacity mismatch.
- For an online Private Battle, open the Lobby battle pot, create a room, optionally set its three-digit PIN, choose mode/stage, then have guests join and ready up.
- For local wireless, meet in The Shoal; for LAN, connect all consoles to the same wired router and follow Nintendo's LAN sequence.
- If the room is missing, record update version and connection method for each console before changing router or account settings.

Scope and safety
The support matrix describes supported setup paths; it does not diagnose NAT, Wi-Fi interference or a temporary Nintendo service issue. Each player needs a console and game copy. Online play also depends on Nintendo's service and membership conditions for the account/region.

Before you play
- I counted players and spectators separately.
- I matched the mode to online, local wireless or LAN.
- Every player has a separate console and copy; no split-screen was assumed.
- I recorded each console's update version if joining failed.
Frequently asked questions
Can four people play on one Switch?
No. Nintendo says each player needs their own console and game copy; split-screen is unavailable.
Can Salmon Run use a 5-player room?
No. Nintendo lists at most four players per Salmon Run game.
Does this planner test my connection?
No. It only checks the support matrix against your selections; it cannot inspect consoles or the network.
