Start with the bottleneck, not a recruitment target
Automation only helps when the missing step is understood. Write down what is empty, what should produce it, and which input that station needs. A lack of output can be caused by missing materials, an unavailable task, a mode rule or a worker assignment; adding another follower will not diagnose which one.
| Observed issue | Check first | Smallest safe change |
|---|---|---|
| A stockpile is empty | Is the item obtainable and is its source/storage accessible? | Assign or perform only the missing gather step |
| A station is idle | Does it have the recipe, ingredients and enabled task? | Correct one input or task, then observe |
| Craft output is accumulating | Is hauling/storage or downstream demand the bottleneck? | Free the blocked storage path before adding production |
| Defenses are weak | Does the current mode/server expose the relevant role or equipment? | Check mode rules and prepare one defensive assignment |

One-change assignment loop
- In the tribe/management interface available in your mode, select the current bottleneck and record the exact missing item or task.
- Check the chosen worker's visible role/task menu and the station's visible recipe/input requirements; do not infer hidden trait multipliers.
- Assign one worker or perform one missing setup step, then observe whether the named output changes in the actual save.
- If it does not, undo or pause the assignment and inspect access, inputs, storage and current server rules before scaling up.
- Only copy the assignment to additional workers after the first change resolves the bottleneck in your own save; note mode, server and patch for any community advice.

Avoid unverified stat rankings
Steam discussions and community guides can surface useful questions but are not official mechanics documentation. This guide does not rank tribespeople, assert exact trait percentages or provide a current optimal workforce count. Keep any external player tip labeled as a report and reproduce it only after checking your own mode/build.

Before you play
- I named the exact bottleneck before assigning a role.
- The job and its inputs are visible in my current interface.
- I changed one assignment and observed the result in my own save.
- I did not treat an external UGC tier list as official or tested fact.
Frequently asked questions
How many followers should I recruit first?
There is no universal number in the cited official pages. Add capacity only when a specific observed job justifies it and your mode/server allows it.
Does this calculator know whether an NPC has the right trait?
No. The accompanying local planner only organizes the bottleneck you enter; it cannot read your save or game UI.
