The save-safety rule comes before troubleshooting
EA says it disables Mods during updates because a previously working Mod can become incompatible. Its prescribed first test is to load Live Mode with Mods disabled. The important safety boundary is the exit: leave without saving before turning Custom Content and Mods back on. This avoids treating a clean, no-Mod launch as permission to overwrite a modded household.
- Before opening an important household, make a normal backup using the supported backup approach for your platform; do not rely on this page to create one.
- Launch The Sims 4 with Mods disabled and choose Resume or Load Game to check whether the base game works.
- From Live Mode, choose Menu > Exit Game and confirm Exit Game again to exit without saving. Do not choose Save and Exit while custom content is absent.
- Use the main-menu version shown at lower left when checking a creator's compatibility note.

Re-enable only after checking compatibility
EA's instructions place creator verification before re-enabling. A creator may need time to update a Mod after a game patch; a Mod's prior success does not establish compatibility with the new build. The order below separates the no-Mod baseline from the post-update Mod test.
- Check the creator's own site or update note for the exact game version currently installed; avoid assuming every Mod needs the same update.
- If the creator provides a replacement, follow their instructions for removing the old version and installing the new one.
- In Game Options > Other, select Enable Custom Content and Mods; then fully exit and relaunch the game.
- Test the affected behavior. If errors remain, remove or isolate the specific Mod and re-check its creator notes; record the exact error and build before asking for help.

Choose the next step from the observed symptom
A no-Mod launch that works is evidence that the issue is associated with the modded setup, but it does not identify which file is responsible. EA's troubleshooting guidance suggests adding Mods back in batches when finding problem Mods; this is a narrowing method, not a guarantee that one file is the only cause.
| Observed result | Next useful check | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Game fails with Mods disabled too | Use EA's general game repair/troubleshooting path and capture the exact error | Blaming a Mod before comparing the clean baseline |
| Clean baseline works; issue returns with Mods | Isolate in small batches, then test the suspect batch more narrowly | Deleting the whole folder without a backup copy |
| Mod creator has not updated for your build | Leave that Mod disabled while checking creator guidance later | Assuming an older file is compatible because it loaded once |
| CC vanished after a saved test | Stop overwriting the affected save and check platform backup options | Saving repeatedly with CC/Mods disabled |

What the current version note means
The Sims Team's October 27, 2026 update post lists PC 1.129.39.1030, Mac 1.129.39.1230 and Console 2.40. Those values are a dated cross-check only; the game may update again, and the post does not prove your install is current. Read your own Main Menu version before contacting a creator. EA's Mods instructions here concern PC/Mac Mod management and should not be used as a console file workflow.

Evidence and limits
This is an editorial checklist derived from EA's published sequence, not a test of a particular Mod or saved household. The embedded tool only formats a next-step list from the selections you make. It does not scan folders, disable Mods, back up files, repair a save or verify creator compatibility.

Before you play
- I noted my exact PC/Mac game version before checking creator compatibility.
- I tested with Mods disabled and exited without saving.
- I checked the creator's own update notes before replacing or re-enabling a Mod.
- I kept a backup copy before moving Mods in batches.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save after testing the game with Mods disabled?
Avoid saving that test if you want the modded content to remain in the household. EA warns that Save and Exit before re-enabling Mods/Custom Content may remove content from the save.
Does a successful launch without Mods prove which Mod broke?
No. It only narrows the issue to the modded setup. Add Mods back in batches and test to isolate a likely cause.
Can this advice fix console mods?
No. The described Mods folder procedure is for PC/Mac; the cited EA instructions do not provide a console Mod installation workflow.
