The Xbox account is the progress anchor

Rare says Sea of Thieves progress carries across supported platforms but is tied to the Xbox account. Seeing a new-pirate prompt or unexpected progress after sign-in is a reason to verify which Microsoft account is active, not to create or link another account as an experiment.

Verify first, then link only once

Use the sequence below before opening the PS5 link confirmation.

  1. Sign in to the Sea of Thieves website and open the reputation/profile page for each Microsoft account you may use.
  2. Identify the account that shows the pirate and progress you intend to keep using.
  3. On PS5, sign in with that exact Microsoft/Xbox account during the game's linking flow.
  4. Read and confirm the account-link warning only after checking it; Rare says the Microsoft account/PSN pairing cannot later be changed.
  5. If the account ownership is unclear or the wrong link already exists, contact Rare Support rather than repeatedly unlinking or relinking.

What the local account-safety tool does not do

The check only records your answers in the page. It cannot sign in, inspect a pirate, verify a reputation page, link accounts, restore progress or ask Rare to reverse a pairing.

Use player reports carefully

Community posts may involve a different PSN/Xbox pairing or an older support policy. Compare the platform and date, but use Rare's current instructions for a consequential account link.
