Classify the failure before opening folders

A world missing from the list, a character missing from selection and a failed dedicated-server load are different cases. The support article explicitly distinguishes Epic and Steam folders on Windows PC.

  1. Record platform, storefront (Steam/Epic), regular client or dedicated server, and exact game build.
  2. Decide whether the missing item is a world or a Dwarf/character.
  3. Close the game/server cleanly before copying files.
  4. Locate the correct folder only from the current official support page; avoid typing paths from an unrelated guide.

Make a reversible backup before any restore

The publisher documents backup files alongside the PC save data. Preserve the whole relevant folder; a filename that looks familiar is not enough to identify the newest valid world.

EvidenceSafe actionAvoid
Steam regular installFollow the Steam folder named in current support and copy the whole folder to a separate backup locationUsing an Epic folder or editing the original in place
Epic regular installFollow the Epic-specific path and preserve its backup filesAssuming Steam and Epic saves share a folder
Dedicated serverUse the separate dedicated-server migration guide and exact configured world filenameDropping a regular save into an arbitrary folder and renaming it
Console editionUse platform-specific official support onlyApplying Windows paths or claiming PC restore steps work on console

Restore only the matching save type

The official support source provides steps and paths that can change. Do not delete a world file to force a backup to load unless the current official article instructs that exact operation for the exact situation.

  1. Keep one untouched copy of the original save folder outside the game/server directory.
  2. Use official instructions for the same storefront and save type; compare the full filename and timestamp before selecting a candidate.
  3. For dedicated-server migration, use the separate official guide and configured OptionalWorldFilename behavior rather than assuming regular-client paths.
  4. Start the client/server and verify the expected world appears before removing any backup copy.
  5. If the result differs, stop and contact support with platform, storefront, world/character type and a concise symptom—do not publish saves or personal Windows paths.

Frequently asked questions

Does an MW_ filename identify every character save?

The cited support article identifies MW_ world-save filenames; do not generalize that prefix to every character file.

Can I use these paths on console?

No. This guide is specifically for Windows PC support paths.

Can I rename a save to make it load?

Do not rename files unless the current official instructions for that exact server/restore case direct you to do so.

Sources & revision notes

Editorial revision: November 7, 2026; not a gameplay test date. The reference notes identify source limits and version differences.

  1. North Beach Games Support: Restore Epic and Steam saves/backups (Official)

Support documents separate Epic/Steam folder guidance and world backup files. Paths and folder separation are Windows-PC and storefront-specific; do not apply them to consoles. Back up the entire relevant save folder before any restore and follow current support instructions exactly. No file was modified.

  2. Return to Moria Steam Discussions (Community)

External player posts are anecdotal and may concern a different world, edition, patch or host setup. Identify Steam/Epic/console, Campaign or Sandbox, save owner, host/server type and exact symptom; never upload raw private save data or account details.

What changed in this revision
