Begin with the Pocket-vs-tabletop boundary
Pokémon Support explicitly says the rules of Pokémon TCG Pocket differ from the Pokémon Trading Card Game. The tabletop rulebook or a paper-play ruling is therefore not automatically the right answer for Pocket. Use the in-app Tips or the question-mark help on the relevant screen, then compare the exact card text with the Pocket battle FAQ.
This article is a guide to several recurring FAQ categories, not a complete rulebook. If a new card or later update changes the interaction, use the current card wording and current official FAQ rather than treating these examples as universal templates.

Separate a Knock Out from an effect-based discard
Pokémon Support's battle FAQ says points are earned only when an opposing Pokémon is Knocked Out. If a card effect discards a Pokémon in play, the opponent does not receive points merely because the Pokémon left play. The FAQ gives Klefki's Dismantling Keys Ability as an example.
A useful check is to ask what the game says happened: was the Pokémon Knocked Out by damage or another applicable rule, or was it removed by an effect? Do not count every removal as a Knock Out.
| What happened | Pocket ruling in the FAQ | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Opponent Pokémon was Knocked Out | Points are awarded for a Knock Out | Confirm the result screen and state-based outcome |
| Opponent Pokémon was discarded by a card effect | No points for the discard alone | Identify whether a separate Knock Out actually occurred |
| Opponent Pokémon moved away or changed zones | Not enough information by itself to award points | Read the exact effect and Pocket's current ruling |

Check attack cost and Energy source separately
- Look immediately to the left of the attack name in the Pocket card view for an Energy symbol.
- If no Energy symbol is shown, Pokémon Support says the attack needs no Energy attached and can be used on the first turn of the player going first.
- For abilities that trigger when Energy is attached, trace where that Energy came from. The official Jolteon ex FAQ example triggers for Energy attached from the Energy Zone, including when an effect attaches Energy from that zone.
- Do not assume the same trigger occurs when Energy moves from the discard pile or is moved from one Pokémon to another; Pokémon Support specifically says those cases do not activate that example ability.
- Compare the exact effect text and in-app ruling for the card you are using; do not generalize a named-card ruling beyond its stated condition.
| Question | Pocket support example | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| Can this attack be used with no attached Energy? | Yes, if the attack shows no Energy symbol | Check the displayed cost next to the attack name |
| Does Energy attachment trigger the cited Jolteon ability? | When attached from the Energy Zone | Trace the source zone, not only the destination Pokémon |
| Does moving attached Energy trigger it? | No, per the FAQ example | Separate zone-to-Pokémon attachment from transfer between Pokémon |

Check whether an effect was cleared by a zone change
The Pocket FAQ's Buzzwole ex example says effects applied to a Pokémon are removed when it returns to the Bench. That can explain why a restriction that appeared to last through the next turn no longer applies after the Pokémon was benched and later returned.
The FAQ's Scizor ex/Gale Thrust example also distinguishes how Scizor reached the Active Spot: the additional damage applies when Scizor moves from Bench to Active during the same turn it attacks, but not when it is promoted after the Active Pokémon is Knocked Out during the opponent's turn, nor when Scyther moves Active and then evolves. Those are card-specific official examples, not blanket rules for every attack.
| Sequence | FAQ explanation |
|---|---|
| Buzzwole ex uses Big Beat, returns to Bench, later attacks again | Returning to Bench removes the applied restriction effect in the cited ruling |
| Scizor moves from Bench to Active, then uses Gale Thrust that same turn | The FAQ says the additional damage condition is met |
| Scizor is promoted after an opponent-turn Knock Out | The FAQ says the additional damage is not added |
| Scyther moves to Active, then evolves to Scizor | The FAQ says this does not meet the cited additional-damage condition |

Make a useful community question
If the current in-app help does not answer the interaction, write down Pocket rather than tabletop, the card and expansion/version context, the exact action sequence, Energy source, zone changes and result. Link a current official FAQ if you believe it addresses the ruling. Community replies can help compare interpretations, but user posts are not official rules.

Before you play
- I confirmed this is Pokémon TCG Pocket, not the tabletop Pokémon TCG or Pokémon TCG Live.
- I checked whether the Pokémon was Knocked Out or discarded by an effect.
- I read the attack's displayed Energy symbol and traced the actual Energy source.
- I checked whether a Pokémon returned to the Bench and had its effects removed.
- I treated named-card FAQ examples as card-specific rather than universal rules.
- I reviewed current in-app Tips/help and the updated official FAQ for later changes.
Frequently asked questions
Does discarding an opponent's Pokémon award a point in Pocket?
Pokémon Support says points are awarded only when an opponent's Pokémon is Knocked Out; an effect-based discard by itself gives no points.
Can I attack on turn one when going first?
The Pocket Battle Rules FAQ says an attack with no Energy symbol displayed can be used without attached Energy, including on the first turn when going first.
Why did an Energy-trigger ability fail when I moved Energy?
Some abilities specify Energy attached from the Energy Zone. The FAQ's Jolteon ex example does not trigger for Energy moved from the discard pile or transferred from another Pokémon.
Does this explain tabletop Pokémon TCG rules?
No. Pokémon Support states Pocket rules differ from the tabletop Pokémon TCG. Use Pocket's in-app Tips and Pocket-specific support.
