Unlock the menu before troubleshooting the connection
Nintendo Support identifies a progression gate: Link Play appears in the X menu only after Rewards is unlocked in Mable's Research. Nintendo's estimate is approximately 1–1.5 hours of play, not a guaranteed timer. If you are earlier in the story, an absent menu is expected and is not evidence of an account or network fault.
- Continue Mable's Research until the Rewards feature is unlocked; use the in-game research objective as the authority for your save.
- Open the X menu and confirm that Link Play is now listed. If not, record the current research objective and check Nintendo's support page rather than changing router settings.
- Select Link Play, then decide whether you want Ranked Battle, Private Battle or Link Trade before creating or joining a session.
- Use the local-only checker below to compare your intended mode with participant count and the requirements you have verified. It cannot inspect your save or console.

Choose a mode by task, not by the symptom
Nintendo lists different limits for the modes. Ranked Battle is online matchmaking, Private Battle is for a private group locally or online, and Link Trade is a two-player exchange using a shared eight-digit code. The official Battle Club description adds the match context; it is not evidence of a guaranteed team composition or matchmaking time.
| Goal | Mode to select | Players and connection | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compete in ranked matchmaking | Ranked Battle | Up to four online participants | Internet and paid Nintendo Switch Online |
| Play a private battle with a known group | Private Battle | Up to four; local wireless or online | Online rules apply only for online sessions; local players match update versions |
| Exchange Pokémon with one person | Link Trade | Two players; local or online | Share the same eight-digit code privately; do not post it publicly |

If the option appears but players cannot connect
Separate progression from connection prerequisites. For online play, confirm the console connection and active membership required by Nintendo; do not apply that paid-online requirement to a local wireless session. For local play, compare the version displayed on each system and update them to the same software version. Avoid changing accounts, deleting save data or sharing trade codes in public while the cause is unknown.
- Record each player's console family, displayed software version and chosen mode.
- For online play, verify internet access and that the relevant Nintendo Account has the required active paid membership.
- For local wireless, install the same game update on all participating systems and retry nearby with the same mode.
- For a trade, confirm both players are in Link Trade and privately exchange the same eight-digit code.
- If failure remains, compare Nintendo Support's current steps and report the exact mode, platform, version and message; treat community posts as unverified comparisons.

Platform and version boundary
This is a Switch-family guide, not a Pokémon HOME or cross-save guide. The official announcement describes Link Battle compatibility between the Nintendo Switch game and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition/upgrade, but edition compatibility does not waive the current menu unlock, online membership or same-update requirement for local players. Nintendo's update-history page currently shows version 2.0.2 dated March 19, 2026 in this checked snapshot; it may change, so verify the live page and console before diagnosing a current issue.

- Trade codes are shared privately, and any unresolved report records mode, console and version.
