Keeper feeding and welfare triage

Mark only what you checked in your zoo. This PC-oriented local checklist cannot inspect a save, staff route, species settings or current game state.

Next checks from your answers:
  • Select the animal and confirm hunger in its info panel; an empty tray alone does not establish hunger.
  • Confirm the habitat and the keeper hut/staff room are covered by the intended work zone, or that staff can reach them without it.
  • Check for a powered, path-connected, reachable keeper hut near the habitat; food preparation may require a trip out and back.
  • Check the keeper can reach a staff room and rest; Frontier says tired keepers may not enter to care for animals.

Start at the animal panel, not the empty bowl

Frontier's troubleshooting page says keepers will not feed an animal unless it is hungry. The animal info panel is the relevant check; an empty food tray can be normal if enrichment feeders have food capacity and are being filled first. This distinction prevents spending money on extra keepers or feeders when the animal has no immediate food need.

What you observeFrontier's guidanceFirst check
Empty tray, animal not hungryNot a failed feeding jobCheck hunger in the animal panel; don't force a keeper call
Animal hungry; keeper leaves habitatPreparing food at a keeper hut may be normalCheck that a reachable keeper hut exists and is powered/path-connected
Keeper fills enrichment feeders onlyKeepers fill enrichment first; that may be sufficientCheck feeder capacity and the animal's hunger/welfare panel

Trace the keeper's work route in order

The support article describes a sequence: enter and inspect; handle water; if food is needed, leave to prepare it at a keeper hut; return to feed; then clean if no more urgent task remains. A keeper walking away is not by itself evidence of failure. Check whether the facilities and assignment support that sequence before changing several things at once.

  1. Select the animal and confirm its live hunger state; note the exact welfare/food warning before editing the habitat.
  2. Check the keeper's panel: feeding must be enabled, the keeper must not be exhausted, unhappy or assigned an unrealistic workload, and the correct work zone must include the habitat.
  3. Confirm the habitat gate, keeper hut and staff room are powered where required, connected to paths the staff can reach, and not blocked by access/pathing problems.
  4. Check that the keeper hut and staff room are in practical range. Frontier warns that long walks can consume a keeper's energy and slow the route.
  5. Check the habitat inspection interval and use 'call keeper' only for an emergency; Frontier notes it pushes work to the next available keeper and can disrupt normal scheduling.
  6. After changing one route or assignment, let the in-game schedule run and recheck the animal panel before making another change.

Verify the food setup without confusing feeder and tray states

Frontier recommends correct feeders/enrichment items for the species, and says unsuitable items may not be used. In mixed habitats, a feeder that works for one species may not solve another's needs. The support page also notes that better-quality food can increase welfare even when animals are already being fed; this is distinct from a keeper failing to perform the job.

SymptomLikely category to inspectAvoid assuming
Keeper visits but animal remains hungrySuitable feeder, reachable feeding station, keeper hut prep and habitat assignmentThat an empty tray proves no food is available
Enrichment filled; tray emptyCould be normal if animals are fed and feeder capacity is enoughThat every feeding location must be topped up each visit
Food appears on groundFeeder capacity or access may be insufficientThat the keeper is lazy or the game ignored the work order
Animal is fed but welfare remains lowFood quality and other welfare needs are separate checksThat more keepers automatically improve food quality

Run the local keeper triage

Mark only facts you have checked in your own zoo. The tool prioritizes next diagnostic steps based on Frontier's support guidance; it does not read your save, know the species' precise food requirements, calculate travel time or confirm the result.

When the checklist does not match your build

This workflow is based on Frontier's PC support article. Planet Zoo's dated 1.20.0 and 1.18.2 notes show that support and fixes can change across builds, modes and scenarios, but those notes do not establish that every keeper symptom is a current bug. If one controlled change fails, report the exact build, mode, species, work zone and panel status through Frontier support; treat Steam player replies as unverified leads.

Before you play

  • Confirm animal hunger in its info panel; an empty tray alone is not enough.
  • Check keeper feeding role, workload, energy and work-zone habitat coverage.
  • Verify reachable, powered keeper hut and staff room plus path access.
  • Check inspection interval and species-suitable feeders/enrichment; change one variable at a time.
  • Treat this as PC support guidance; no zoo state or fix was tested.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call a keeper every time the food tray is empty?

No. Frontier says check hunger in the animal info panel; keepers may fill enrichment feeders first and an empty tray can be normal.

Why does the keeper walk out after inspecting?

If food is needed, Frontier says the keeper leaves to prepare it at a keeper hut and returns. Check hut access and assignment before treating the route as a failure.

Will the tool tell me the exact cause?

No. It orders the checks from your own observations and cannot inspect a zoo, species requirements, save or live staff route.

Frontier's PC troubleshooting article checked November 6, 2026. Its Planet Zoo section covers keeper feeding/inspection: staff-room and keeper-hut access, work zones, roles, habitat assignment load, hunger checks, feeders, path distance, staff rest/training and food quality. It is PC-specific support guidance; no zoo save or staff schedule was inspected.

Official Steam announcement feed checked November 6, 2026. The visible Planet Zoo 1.20.0 update notes (November 2025) include scenario and stability fixes; 1.18.2 (January 2025) documents staff, animal and mode fixes. These dated notes are historical patch context, not a claim that a specific current bug remains open.

What changed in this revision

November 6, 2026: organized Frontier's PC staff troubleshooting guidance into a stepwise keeper/habitat diagnostic and local triage. No Planet Zoo save or staff route was inspected.
