Separate four states that look like a feeding problem

A tray, feeder, keeper visit and welfare score are different signals. Frontier's guidance distinguishes hunger, whether a keeper can reach and prepare food, whether a feeder/enrichment item is suitable, and whether the food quality is high enough to raise welfare. Work through those indicators in the order below rather than treating the score as a direct feeder meter.

Check species and capacity before buying more food objects

Frontier says incorrect feeders may not be used, especially in mixed enclosures, and feeding stations that staff cannot access can lead to food being placed on the ground. It also says enrichment feeders are filled before trays and may hold enough food by themselves. A correct-looking food object is not proof the game recognizes it for every species.

  1. Open the animal's information panel and identify the species and the exact welfare/food message.
  2. Inspect the habitat's feeder and enrichment item types against the animal's requirements shown by the game; in a mixed habitat, check each species separately.
  3. Check whether the keeper can reach the feeding station and keeper hut through the habitat gate and path network.
  4. If enrichment feeders are being filled and the animal is fed, inspect capacity before adding another tray; Frontier says filling enrichment first may be sufficient.
  5. If food is on the ground, check feeder suitability and access. Then watch whether the next keeper visit uses the intended station.

When food quality is the remaining lever

Frontier's PC support page says higher-quality food affords better nutrition and can increase welfare even when animals are being fed. It does not publish a universal per-species numerical uplift on that page. Read the quality option available in your own current zoo and compare the animal's displayed state after the change; do not treat this as a guarantee that every welfare warning will disappear.

  1. First establish that food is actually delivered and the animal panel no longer reports hunger.
  2. If welfare still cites nutrition/food, inspect the in-game food-quality selection for that species and choose the higher option only if the zoo can sustain its cost and supply.
  3. Keep habitat, staff, food quality and enrichment unchanged during the comparison where practical, so the result is interpretable.
  4. Recheck the animal panel after the game processes the change. If welfare remains low, follow the other needs named there rather than repeating food upgrades.

Avoid treating a dated patch note as a universal fix

Official update notes document some historical animal/staff fixes, including feeding and habitat-related fixes in particular versions. A dated fix can explain an old report, but it does not prove the current build has the same defect—or that your current symptom is a bug. Record the build and mode when escalating.

Before you play

  • Read the animal panel; distinguish hungry, fed and low welfare states.
  • Verify species suitability and feeder access before adding objects.
  • Remember keepers fill enrichment feeders first; an empty tray may be expected.
  • If fed but welfare is low, compare the live food-quality option and other listed needs.
  • Report build, mode, species, feeder and exact panel text; do not call a dated bug fix current without evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can food quality raise welfare even if feeding already works?

Frontier's support page says higher-quality food can afford better nutrition and increase welfare; it does not guarantee every welfare issue will be solved.

Does an empty food tray mean animals were not fed?

Not necessarily. Frontier says keepers fill enrichment items first and those may have enough capacity; check hunger and food state in the animal panel.

Does Frontier provide a numerical welfare formula here?

No. This source gives troubleshooting guidance, not a universal formula or species-by-species welfare calculator.
