Pick by the activity, not by the number of controllers
Pikmin 4's two-player options solve different problems. In Story co-op, Player 1 continues the adventure while Player 2 throws pebbles and items with the Pebble Pitcher. Dandori Battle is the competitive/versus activity: two players can compete, or Player 1 and Player 2 can team against a CPU. Stages unlock as Story Mode progresses.
| What you want | Choose | What Player 2 does | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help with a cave, route or story fight | Story Mode → Co-op Mode | Uses Pebble Pitcher for pebbles/items; Player 1 remains the main explorer | Open Options with – during play or from title screen → Co-op Mode |
| Race a friend for collected items | Dandori Battle → P1 vs P2 | Competes locally against Player 1 | Title screen → Dandori Battle Mode → P1 vs P2 |
| Cooperate against a CPU | Dandori Battle → P1 & P2 vs CPU | Helps Player 1 with Pebble Pitcher while the CPU is the opponent | Title screen → Dandori Battle Mode → choose players and stage |

Start Story co-op without entering the wrong mode
Nintendo's support page gives the same basic route whether you begin at the title screen or during a story session. Pairing extra controllers may be prompted. Read the on-screen control guide: the helper role is deliberately different from the main player's control.
- On the title screen, choose Story Mode; if already playing, have Player 1 press – to open Options.
- Select Co-op Mode. Pair the additional controller if the console prompts you.
- Review each control panel and press A to confirm until Co-op Mode begins.
- If you meant to leave co-op, Player 1 opens Options → Single-Player Mode → Go to Single-Player Mode.
- If you wanted a head-to-head match instead, exit to the title screen and choose Dandori Battle Mode; Story co-op will not turn the story into a race.

Set up Dandori Battle and unlock the stage you need
Dandori Battle is selected from the title screen, not the in-story Co-op Mode submenu. Nintendo lists P1 vs CPU, P1 vs P2, and P1 & P2 vs CPU; the stage list is tied to Story Mode progress. An unavailable stage is therefore a progression gate, not evidence that a second account or online subscription is missing.
- Return to the title screen and select Dandori Battle Mode.
- Choose the intended player pairing: P1 vs P2 for a local duel, or P1 & P2 vs CPU for teamwork against the computer.
- Pair another controller if prompted, then choose a stage already unlocked through Story Mode progress.
- Adjust player, battle and difficulty settings before selecting Start Battle.
- If a stage is absent, make Story progress and check the mode's current stage list; do not troubleshoot network settings for a local mode.

Use the local mode checker as a setup prompt
The local checker below only routes your selected goal to Nintendo's documented menu path. It cannot detect controllers, unlocks, region restrictions, online status, or whether a second player is actually connected.

Before you play
- Decide whether Player 2 should help in Story or play a Dandori Battle before pairing controllers.
- Use Options → Co-op Mode for Story help; use the title-screen Dandori Battle menu for local versus/team play.
- Remember the Story helper uses the Pebble Pitcher; Player 1 remains the primary explorer.
- Dandori Battle stages unlock through Story progress.
- If reporting a problem, include edition, exact mode, stage and controller count; omit account details.
