Get an actual demand number first

The printing pod makes early expansion tempting. Every additional Duplicant also adds food and oxygen demand. The consulted Wiki lists 1,000 kcal per cycle for a baseline Duplicant and 1,500 for Bottomless Stomach. Do not reuse a three-Dupe budget after printing a fourth or overlook traits and altered difficulty settings.

The beginner reference recommends early sanitation, small expansion and a steady food source. Those are sensible priorities, but the number that governs whether a new mouth is safe is your observed calorie production versus consumption, not the cycle counter alone.

  1. Read your colony's current food stock and each Duplicant's traits or modified consumption settings.
  2. Multiply baseline mouths by about 1,000 kcal per cycle; add any trait-specific extra demand.
  3. Count only Mealwood that is domesticated, within its temperature and pressure range, fertilized and being harvested, not every seed in storage.
  4. Compare several cycles of actual harvested food and stock trend before printing another Duplicant. Delay expansion if reserves fall.

Convert plants into a cautious food budget

The Wiki gives ordinary domesticated Mealwood one 600-kcal Meal Lice harvest every three cycles when harvested promptly. That averages 200 kcal per cycle per plant. Dividing a baseline 1,000-kcal demand by 200 gives five plants per Duplicant as an idealized minimum, not a safe fixed build order. The same reference warns that harvest delay can lower throughput.

Domesticated Mealwood also consumes 10 kg of Dirt per plant per cycle. A plot that is big enough on paper can become a food failure when Dirt runs low or growth stops. The cited plant page gives a normal growth temperature range of 10–30 °C; check the in-game plant status rather than assuming every seed is productive.

Planning caseIdealized food mathWhat can still fail
3 baseline Dupes3,000 kcal/cycle ÷ 200 = 15 working plantsHarvest lag, temperature, Dirt or spoilage; add a measured buffer
4 baseline Dupes4,000 kcal/cycle ÷ 200 = 20 working plantsPrinting early raises demand before new crops mature
3 baseline Dupes + 1 Bottomless Stomach4,500 kcal/cycle ÷ 200 = 22.5, so at least 23 ideal plantsTraits and difficulty can shift the budget further
15 ordinary plants15 × 10 kg = 150 kg Dirt/cycleA stocked food bin does not prove the Dirt supply is sustainable

Worked decision: when to refuse the fourth print

Illustrative calculation, not a played save: a three-Dupe colony has 15 ordinary domesticated plants, but food stock has been flat rather than rising for several cycles. The idealized plant output equals three baseline mouths exactly. A fourth baseline Duplicant would add about 1,000 kcal/cycle; at the same assumed yield, that is five more promptly harvested plants plus the Dirt to feed them, before any reserve. Decline the print for now. Stabilize the plot and verify a positive food trend first.

If the menu reports stifled or overheated plants, building five more identical farm tiles may not solve the real problem. Correct the first growth failure, then revisit the budget. Wild plants can supplement, but their timing differs from domesticated Mealwood and should not be silently counted at the same rate.

Keep a short three-cycle log

Track food stock at the same point in three consecutive cycles, plant status, number of harvests and Dirt stock. A rising stock with stable farm inputs supports expansion; a falling stock or newly stalled plants argues for repair. The record is more useful than a single screenshot of a full ration box.

Before you play

  • Daily demand includes current Duplicants and traits.
  • Only productive domesticated plants are counted in the 200-kcal estimate.
  • Dirt and growth conditions are checked.
  • Food trend is positive before adding a new mouth.

Frequently asked questions

Are five Mealwood plants per Duplicant enough?

Five is the theoretical floor for baseline consumption and prompt ordinary harvests. Build a buffer and verify actual food stock, plant status and Dirt supply.

Should I count wild Mealwood the same way?

No. The cited Wiki gives wild and domesticated plants different growth times. Do not apply the 200-kcal-per-cycle estimate to wild plants.

Was the four-Duplicant case tested by GamerWin?

No. It is labelled arithmetic from cited community values, not a played colony result.
