Browser-local Competitive party checklist

Check mode, platform pool, and rank spread

Enter only ranks and devices you choose. This is a rough reminder, not Blizzard matchmaker code; it cannot read accounts, pool settings, current role ranks, party eligibility or season rules. The live queue preview is authoritative.

Player 1
Player 2

Estimated rank spread: 0 division step(s); screening threshold based on highest entered tier (Gold) is 5 under the latest cited Blizzard notes. This estimates Narrow-range only; rank placement details, queue/role context, thresholds, party-size rules and the live classifier may differ.

Entered pool set: Controller Pool + Mouse and Keyboard Pool. Mixed pools are a compatibility warning; inspect the current queue prompt.

  1. Check each player's current rank in the same target queue/role.
  2. Open Gameplay Options on console and inspect the actual Controller or Mouse and Keyboard pool selection.
  3. Check Stadium and casual modes separately from core Competitive.
  4. Read the queue screen before starting; confirm current Blizzard notes if it conflicts with this rough estimate.

Rank thresholds and tier names can change. The calculations above are a rough planning aid only; no inputs leave this page or persist after reload.

Identify the queue before counting ranks

Wide/Narrow classification is a core Competitive matchmaking concept. Blizzard's 2024 grouping patch describes all core Competitive groups as Narrow or Wide, while later live Competitive notes updated the thresholds for the highest ranks. Use the currently displayed mode—Role Queue, Open Queue, Stadium Ranked, Stadium Quick Play or another playlist—before applying any rule.

The 2026 live notes explicitly state that a bug had unintentionally re-enabled grouping restrictions for Stadium Ranked and that a previous update removed them. That is a good reason not to infer Stadium's rules from a core Competitive article.

Use the latest threshold notes—but let the client decide

Blizzard's older Wide Group explainer said players at lower tiers could be more than five divisions apart and still be Narrow, Master had a tighter threshold, and the highest ranks had additional restrictions. Later live patch notes changed those top-tier limits. The latest specific official grouping note found for this guide says Master and Grandmaster players must be within two divisions, and Champion players within one division, to be Narrow.

Because rank tiers and matchmaking rules can be revised (including the later addition of Emerald), treat any static division-distance calculation as a screening estimate only. If the client labels the party Wide or blocks a queue, follow the current UI rather than trying to override it with a remembered chart.

Understand queue and rank-progress tradeoffs

Blizzard says Wide Groups may wait longer because the matchmaker seeks similarly distributed groups, and that rank-progress changes are reduced according to group width and the group's highest rank. A Wide label is not necessarily a failure: it describes a different matchmaking path, not a promise of an impossible queue.

Blizzard also documented a restriction against four-player Wide Groups so solos would not be matched into a Wide lobby. This is a rule that can be revised, so use the current queue error/party preview for exact supported group sizes rather than rearranging the party from an old screenshot.

  1. Open the intended core Competitive playlist and invite the actual party members.
  2. Read each player's rank for the relevant queue/role, not a different queue's badge.
  3. Wait for the live group-width label or queue explanation before pressing Start.
  4. If the group is Wide, decide whether longer queue times and smaller progress changes are acceptable; alternatively adjust the party or choose a non-Competitive mode.
  5. If a party size is rejected, capture the current non-sensitive error and compare it with the latest official live notes instead of relying on historical group-size limits.

Keep Stadium out of the core Competitive checklist

Stadium has its own Ranked ladder, group rules, and matchmaking changes. Blizzard's Stadium materials have described different friend-group treatment from core Competitive, and the November 3, 2026 live notes state that grouping restrictions for Stadium Ranked had been removed after a bug re-enabled them. Do not apply the core Narrow/Wide threshold table to Stadium.

If Stadium's current party screen behaves differently, check the current Stadium notes and the in-client message. The tool below includes a mode selector that explicitly avoids calculating a core Wide result for Stadium.

Before you play

  • I selected core Competitive, not Stadium Ranked or Stadium Quick Play.
  • I checked ranks for the relevant queue/role and every party member.
  • I used the latest official threshold note but trusted the current client Narrow/Wide preview.
  • I understand a Wide group can have longer queues and smaller rank-progress changes.
  • I checked the exact current party-size warning instead of assuming a historical four-player rule is unchanged.
  • For Stadium, I checked Stadium-specific current notes separately.

Frequently asked questions

What rank gap makes a Wide Group in Overwatch core Competitive?

The latest specific Blizzard notes available for this guide say five divisions for lower ranks, two for Master/Grandmaster, and one for Champion to remain Narrow. Since rank structure and rules can change, trust the live group preview.

Can I queue with friends even if our ranks differ?

Blizzard introduced Wide Groups so some rank-disparate parties can play together, with longer queues and modified rank progression. Exact current eligibility and party size are shown by the selected mode's group preview.

Does Stadium use the same Wide Group limits?

No. Stadium has separate queue rules. Blizzard's November 2026 live notes say Stadium Ranked group restrictions had been removed after an unintended re-enable; check current Stadium UI and patch notes.

Does a Wide label mean my party is broken?

Not necessarily. It is a matchmaking classification with different queue and rank-progress tradeoffs. Follow the current queue button/message to see whether that specific party is allowed.

  1. Overwatch Live Patch Notes — Competitive grouping rules (Official)

Blizzard's later live Competitive notes update the highest-rank Narrow-group thresholds (Master/Grandmaster and Champion). The rules can change again; confirm the current group classification in the client.

  2. Defense Matrix Update: Season 10 and Beyond (Wide Groups) (Official)

Blizzard explains Narrow/Wide group intent, separate matchmaking, modifiers and group-size constraints. For present numerical thresholds, also check the later live Competitive patch notes and the group preview in game.

  3. Overwatch Retail Patch Notes — November 3, 2026 (Official)

Current retail notes include the Stadium Ranked group restriction correction. Stadium and core Competitive are distinct queues; inspect the live Stadium mode notes rather than importing core Narrow/Wide rules.

What changed in this revision

November 6, 2026: added a current-source guide separating core Competitive group width from Stadium; deliberately made the client preview authoritative because rank/group rules have changed repeatedly.
