Check mode, platform pool, and rank spread

Enter only ranks and devices you choose. This is a rough reminder, not Blizzard matchmaker code; it cannot read accounts, pool settings, current role ranks, party eligibility or season rules. The live queue preview is authoritative.

Player 1
Player 2

Estimated rank spread: 0 division step(s); screening threshold based on highest entered tier (Gold) is 5 under the latest cited Blizzard notes. This estimates Narrow-range only; rank placement details, queue/role context, thresholds, party-size rules and the live classifier may differ.

Entered pool set: Controller Pool + Mouse and Keyboard Pool. Mixed pools are a compatibility warning; inspect the current queue prompt.

  1. Check each player's current rank in the same target queue/role.
  2. Open Gameplay Options on console and inspect the actual Controller or Mouse and Keyboard pool selection.
  3. Check Stadium and casual modes separately from core Competitive.
  4. Read the queue screen before starting; confirm current Blizzard notes if it conflicts with this rough estimate.

Rank thresholds and tier names can change. The calculations above are a rough planning aid only; no inputs leave this page or persist after reload.

Cross-play and Competitive eligibility answer different questions

Cross-play asks whether platforms can play together in a supported mode. Matchmaking-pool rules decide which players can enter a particular Competitive queue. Blizzard's cross-play FAQ states cross-play is enabled across supported platforms in non-Competitive modes but Competitive has separate pools; later official notes introduced native console mouse-and-keyboard support and renamed those pools Controller and Mouse and Keyboard.

That means a friend invitation can succeed while a particular Competitive queue still rejects the group. Check the exact mode and pool warning rather than repeatedly toggling cross-play or relinking accounts.

Check and align the input pool before inviting

  1. On each platform, open the current Gameplay Options and note the pool shown for the selected input setup.
  2. If playing on console with mouse and keyboard, read the Blizzard prompt before accepting a pool switch. Blizzard says Mouse and Keyboard pool ratings/MMR are separate from the player's Controller Pool progress.
  3. If on PC, do not assume using a controller changes the Competitive pool; Blizzard says PC players remain in Mouse and Keyboard Pool.
  4. For a console-controller player and a PC friend, first decide whether the goal is a cross-play-enabled non-Competitive match or core Competitive. Do not use a non-Competitive cross-play rule as proof that Competitive accepts the group.
  5. Have all players open the intended mode together and inspect the current queue-pool label or error before starting. The client is authoritative if a later patch changes details.
  6. If compatible, group and queue. If not, use a supported non-Competitive mode or an allowed common input pool; don't use unsupported peripherals to bypass pool restrictions.

Worked example: cross-play is on, but Competitive rejects the party

A console player using a controller and a PC friend may be able to play together in a cross-play-enabled casual queue, but this does not establish core Competitive pool eligibility. Check whether the console player is in Controller Pool or has opted into Mouse and Keyboard Pool, and whether the PC player is in the pool required by the current client. If the queue still reports a pool mismatch, trust that warning and use a mode where the party is supported.

A console player who switches to Mouse and Keyboard Pool should also expect pool-specific Competitive ratings according to Blizzard's explanation; do not assume the Controller Pool rank is the same record. The tool below records only what you enter and cannot inspect a profile.

Keep Stadium and account questions separate

Stadium has its own Ranked rules and separate pool/cross-play behavior. Recent Blizzard notes explicitly discuss fully enabled cross-play in Stadium Quick Play, while live patch notes track Stadium Ranked group-rule fixes. Read the note for the exact Stadium submode you intend to play.

This guide addresses matchmaking pools only. It makes no claims about account linking, cross-progression, purchases, skins, or whether any profile data transfers between platforms.

Before you play

  • I named the target mode: core Competitive, casual cross-play, or a specific Stadium queue.
  • I checked each player's platform and current input pool in Gameplay Options.
  • I remembered PC controller remains in Mouse and Keyboard Pool for Competitive.
  • Console mouse-and-keyboard pool progress/rank is not assumed to equal Controller Pool progress.
  • I read the actual party/queue warning rather than treating Cross-Play enabled as universal compatibility.
  • I checked Stadium-specific rules independently.
  • I did not alter account links or make progression-transfer assumptions to fix a queue mismatch.

Frequently asked questions

Can console and PC friends play Overwatch together?

Blizzard supports cross-play in supported non-Competitive modes, but Competitive pool eligibility is a separate check. Native console mouse-and-keyboard pool support adds another distinction; verify the current mode and pool labels.

Does enabling Cross-Play let a console controller join PC Competitive?

Not by itself. Cross-play setting and Competitive input-pool rules differ. Check the current pool names and group warning in the client.

Can a PC player using a controller enter the Controller Pool?

Blizzard's input-pool explanation says PC players remain in Mouse and Keyboard Pool for Competitive integrity. Check current notes in case that rule changes.

Does switching pools transfer my rank?

Do not assume it does. Blizzard says a console player's Controller and Mouse and Keyboard pool rank/progress are separate. This guide does not make claims about account progression or cross-save.

What changed in this revision

November 6, 2026: added an input-pool and cross-play checklist using Blizzard's newer Controller/Mouse and Keyboard pool language; omitted account/progression claims beyond the directly cited pool distinction.
