Freeze the situation before the next save
The most important documented limit is that Capcom cannot supply replacement data when the save has been deleted, corrupted or overwritten. A fresh launch may write new state, so first record what happened and check whether Steam Cloud reports an available copy.
- Close Monster Hunter: World if it is open; do not start a new character or overwrite prompts while the state is unclear.
- Confirm the Steam account and PC profile that normally held the hunter save.
- Check Steam's current Remote Storage / Cloud status for the game and note any sync warning or timestamp.
- If Steam shows local-versus-cloud conflict, compare dates and stop if you cannot identify the intended hunter state.
- Use Steam's current supported preservation/recovery steps; do not download a stranger's save or move files based on an old forum path.

What the official recovery page does—and does not—promise
| Situation | Capcom's stated position | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Save still present locally | World saves may be stored on the PC local drive | Preserve the existing copy before testing |
| Steam Cloud copy exists | Save may also be in Steam Cloud | Check account and timestamp; do not assume cloud is automatically the wanted version |
| Deleted, corrupted or overwritten | Capcom says it is not recoverable and cannot provide replacement data | Avoid additional writes; ask Steam support about any remaining cloud copy |
| Looking for Capcom-side rollback | Capcom says data is not on a Capcom server | Do not expect account support to restore a server snapshot |

Separate missing progress from platform transfer
Monster Hunter: World also lacks cross-progression between PC, PS4 and Xbox One. A hunter absent on another platform may be an expected platform boundary, not a failed Steam sync. Keep World distinct from later entries in the series.
- Record the original platform and the platform where you are looking for the hunter.
- If the platform changed, read Capcom's cross-progression answer before attempting file transfers.
- If both sessions are on the same Steam account and PC, use the Steam save-recovery path instead.
- When contacting support, state World, platform, Steam account context and the last known save date; never send password or recovery codes.

- I confirmed account and platform.
- I checked current Steam Cloud status and timestamps.
- I understand Capcom cannot restore overwritten/corrupted saves.
- I did not confuse World with Rise/Wilds or assume cross-progression.
