Use a stop rule for optional exploration
The publisher confirms the trade-off but does not publish a universal equation linking each room, event or movement to threat. A useful player process is therefore qualitative and state-based: inspect the actual reward and threat shown in the current mission, then compare that with your team's condition and objective.
| Current situation | Decision question | Bounded next step |
|---|---|---|
| Team is healthy and the branch shows a needed reward | Is the stated reward worth the displayed increase/exposure? | Take the branch only if you accept the visible risk |
| Team is damaged or objective is near | Would optional exploration jeopardize mission completion? | Favor the route that preserves a viable exit/mission plan |
| Threat value or cost is unclear | Can the UI/source show what changes? | Do not infer a hidden exact formula; record and check the current display |
| Reward is not relevant to the cohort | Does it change the next mission meaningfully for your plan? | Skipping is a legitimate strategic choice |

Room-by-room route review
Avoid deciding the entire tomb path before you see how the current mission evolves. The source says decisions shape missions ahead, so keep a short note of each branch rather than treating exploration as a free checklist.
- At each choice, record the exact reward or event text shown by the game.
- Check the cohort's current health, equipment and mission objective before accepting an optional detour.
- State the benefit you are pursuing and the threat you are willing to accept.
- If the benefit is unclear or your team cannot absorb the risk, choose the lower-commitment route available in the UI.
- Re-evaluate after the next event; do not reuse a prior route as if it were guaranteed to have the same result.

Worked example: needed weapon vs. already-complete loadout
If an optional exploration choice displays a reward relevant to a planned Tech-Priest build and the squad remains fit for the objective, the reward may justify the added threat for your own run. If the cohort already has the needed equipment and is damaged, the same reward may not be worth pursuing. Those are conditional decisions, not claims about reward odds or a guaranteed ending.

Limits and source confidence
The official overview supports the direction of the trade-off, not numeric thresholds, Awakening percentages or a claim that one route is optimal. Check current mission UI and game version. The linked Steam discussions are user-generated and may include different DLC or difficulty; they are clearly labeled UGC and are not used as proof.

Before you play
- I recorded the reward the current UI actually shows.
- I considered cohort condition and mission objective before exploring.
- I treated threat as a real trade-off rather than a free completion bonus.
- I did not invent a numeric route formula.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed number of optional rooms I should explore?
No fixed room count is established by the cited official overview; it says more exploration brings greater rewards and greater threat.
Does this planner calculate Awakening?
No. PLAION's cited page gives no universal formula, and the tool only organizes values you enter.
Are Steam forum route claims verified?
No. They are user-generated discussions and may describe different game states, difficulty or DLC.
