Mario Kart World route and room triage

Choose the symptoms that match. This is a source-based decision checklist, not a network diagnostic; it cannot inspect a console, membership, rally history or room.

Next documented check

For a missing Drill/Boomerang, Propeller/Turnip, or other recently added Rally route: match everyone's software version, install the current update, then play at least one Knockout Tour rally. Nintendo's 1.8.0 note says the added routes become selectable after a rally has been played.

Diagnose the symptom before changing network settings

A missing route, a version mismatch and a full race room have different documented explanations. The 1.8.0 update added Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally; 1.7.0 added Drill Rally and Boomerang Rally. Nintendo's notes tie these added Knockout Tour options to having played a Rally, while the general update checklist requires the same software version for players who race together.

Check the route unlock in order

Nintendo's current update history records Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally in 1.8.0 and Drill Rally and Boomerang Rally in 1.7.0. For each set, it says the route can be selected if you have played one of the rallies in Knockout Tour. Verify the game update and Rally history before looking for a purchase or online-account fix.

  1. From HOME, highlight Mario Kart World without launching it; press + or − and note the displayed version.
  2. If you are below the update that introduced the route, connect the console to the internet and choose Software Update → Over the Internet.
  3. Open Knockout Tour and play a Rally; return to route selection and check again.
  4. If another player is joining online, have them check the displayed version too. Nintendo says all players need the same software version to play together.
  5. For online rooms, separately verify internet and Nintendo Switch Online. These checks do not apply automatically to local Multiplayer or nearby Wireless Play.

Understand the room-versus-race limit

Version 1.8.0 changed the Online Play and LAN Play room counts: up to 26 people can join the room, while only 24 can participate at a time. When 24 participants are in the game, no additional person can join until one of them switches to Spectator Mode. Nintendo says a player who has joined a room can press Y from the pause menu to switch to spectator; spectators watch and do not participate.

Use the issue triage checker

The browser-local checker routes your selected symptoms to Nintendo's published update or room-cap instructions. It does not read the console, software version, Rally record, account, membership, room count or network; treat the result as a checklist, not a diagnosis.

Before you play

  • Check all players' displayed game versions before changing internet settings.
  • For new Rally routes, update to the release that adds them and play a Knockout Tour Rally.
  • Separate room size (up to 26 people) from race capacity (24 participants).
  • At 24 participants, the release notes require a participant to switch to Spectator Mode before another joins.
  • Use Nintendo's error-code lookup for a concrete connection error; Reddit discussions are user-generated and may describe another version.

Frequently asked questions

Are Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally paid DLC?

Nintendo lists them as general content added in Ver. 1.8.0, not as paid DLC, and says the added Rally routes become selectable after a Rally has been played.

Why does Nintendo say 26 in a room but 24 in a race?

The update notes distinguish people who may join a room (up to 26) from people who can participate in-game (up to 24). At the participant cap, someone must switch to Spectator Mode before another joins.

How do I switch to spectator?

Nintendo's Ver. 1.8.0 notes say to press Y from the pause menu after joining a room. Spectator Mode allows watching without participating.

Does everyone need the same version even if they have the same console model?

Nintendo says all players must use the same software version to play together. Check the version displayed under the game title on each console.
