Pick the connection first; headcount is the second check
These modes are not interchangeable just because all players are physically together. Same-system Multiplayer uses one display and local controllers. Wireless Play is Nintendo's nearby-console mode. Online Play connects through the internet and adds Friends or Anyone paths. Nintendo's support page gives distinct limits for each, so count people and note how many share a console before opening a room.
| Your setup | Nintendo's documented player scope | Good first path | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| All players share one console and screen | 2–4 players, one console | Title screen → press L + R → Multiplayer → choose player count | Pair one supported controller per player; choose a local mode |
| People bring nearby consoles; no internet room needed | 2–8 players total; up to two per console | Title screen → L + R → Wireless Play; host creates a room | Same software version; join the host's nearby room |
| Friends are remote or you want public matchmaking | 2–24 online participants; up to two per console | Title screen → L + R → Online Play → Friends or Anyone | Internet, Nintendo Switch Online, and matching game versions |
| Wired network event | Use Nintendo's separate LAN Play instructions | Choose LAN Play, not Wireless Play | Consult the LAN section for wired hardware and setup limits |

Set up the mode without losing a slot to a second local player
Nintendo's Online and Wireless flows first ask how many people on this system will play. If two people share one console, count both toward the mode maximum. In Online Play, settings such as rules, courses and map warping are generally controlled by Player 1, and the game can warp players back together if they separate too far in Free Roam.
- On each console, install the same Mario Kart World software version. From HOME, highlight the game, press + or − and check the displayed version; update through the internet if needed.
- At the title screen, press L + R and select Multiplayer, Wireless Play or Online Play according to the table.
- Enter the number of players using this console. For Wireless or Online, no more than two can share one console; for same-screen Multiplayer, choose the local 2–4 player count.
- Pair and confirm each controller when prompted, then choose the mode. Online Play offers Friends to create/join a room or Anyone for public matchmaking; Wireless Play uses a nearby room.
- If a Rally route or full room is the problem, use the second guide before repeatedly changing connection settings.

Use the player-count planner
The planner compares your selected total number of human players with the published mode maximum. It intentionally does not estimate bandwidth, latency, console eligibility or how many physical consoles you own. For Wireless and Online Play, check the separate two-players-per-console cap yourself.

Scope and limits
Nintendo Switch 2 is the listed platform in the cited support pages. This guide does not establish cross-play with other consoles or platforms. A nearby group should not select Online Play unless internet play is intended; likewise, Wireless Play's eight-player cap does not become larger by using an internet router. LAN is a separate mode and needs its own wired setup instructions.
Nintendo says online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and all players must be on the same software version. The support pages, not a hands-on test, are the basis for these requirements. For a specific error code, follow Nintendo's error-code support route rather than assuming the player cap is the cause.

Before you play
- Count people, not systems; Wireless and Online permit at most two local players per console.
- One-console Multiplayer is 2–4; nearby Wireless Play is 2–8 total; Online Play is 2–24 participants.
- Use Online → Friends for a friend room, or Online → Anyone for public matchmaking.
- Check matching software versions before troubleshooting a room.
- This browser-local planner cannot inspect your hardware, account, connection or actual lobby.
Frequently asked questions
Can six nearby players use Wireless Play?
Nintendo documents Wireless Play for 2–8 players total, with up to two on each console. Six players fit the total cap if the group also respects the per-console limit.
Does Wireless Play require Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo's cited membership requirement is for online features. Wireless Play is documented as a nearby-console mode; this guide does not infer that it needs NSO.
Can 25 people race online together?
Nintendo's Ver. 1.8.0 notes allow up to 26 people to join a room but cap active participants at 24. The second guide explains the spectator distinction.
Is Mario Kart World cross-platform?
The cited Nintendo instructions document Nintendo Switch 2 modes only. They do not establish cross-platform play, so this guide makes no cross-play claim.
