Vanguard exact-code router

This is a Windows checklist only. It cannot inspect TPM, Windows security settings, BIOS or logs.

Next route: Read the complete VAN/VAL code first. Similar-looking prefixes can have different remedies.

Match the complete code before touching settings

Riot's support articles identify distinct causes: VAN 9001 means Vanguard requires TPM 2.0 but does not detect it; VAN 9002 says Windows Exploit Protection is disabled or the required CFG/default mitigations are not set. These checks are for Windows PC, not consoles or macOS.

Exact codeRiot's stated routeDo not do this
VAN 9001Check TPM 2.0 availability/status; use Riot's TPM guideDo not toggle random BIOS settings or clear TPM keys.
VAN 9002Set listed Windows Exploit Protection system options to Use default; remove Riot-specific Program Settings overrides as instructedDo not reset all security settings or remove unrelated application entries.
Different VAN codeOpen Riot's current Vanguard error-code listDo not assume this VAN 9001/9002 article applies.
VAL codeUse the game's VAL error guide insteadDo not confuse VAL and VAN prefixes.

Follow the safer Windows-only sequence

For VAN 9002, Riot says use Windows Start search for Exploit Protection, set the listed system settings to Use default, inspect Program Settings for Riot/Vanguard entries and remove those entries, then restart. For VAN 9001, follow Riot's TPM 2.0 article and device maker instructions; firmware layouts differ.

  1. Photograph or write down the exact complete VAN code and Windows version; do not post serial numbers or account IDs.
  2. For VAN 9002, open Windows Security → App & browser control → Exploit protection and compare each listed option with Riot's current article.
  3. Only remove the Riot/Vanguard program-specific overrides Riot names; leave other software's settings alone.
  4. For VAN 9001, first check whether Windows reports TPM 2.0; if firmware configuration is needed, use the PC/motherboard maker's model-specific guide.
  5. Restart once after the supported correction. If the exact code remains, collect Riot's requested logs and submit a private support ticket.

Stop before risky firmware changes

TPM, Secure Boot and other firmware settings can affect device security, encryption and boot behavior. Riot's code article links to TPM guidance; it does not justify clearing a TPM or changing unrelated boot settings. If BitLocker/device encryption is enabled or you are unsure, consult the PC manufacturer or IT administrator before firmware changes.

Use community posts as clues, not instructions

Player posts may involve a different Vanguard code, Windows build or motherboard. Avoid copying commands or BIOS steps from an anonymous reply without confirming them against Riot and the device maker.

  1. Include only the exact error, Windows version and whether Riot's listed step was completed.
  2. Do not upload unredacted logs publicly; Riot logs can contain usernames or local paths.
  3. Use Riot Support for persistent code-specific failures and the OEM for firmware-specific instructions.
