First identify which problem you actually have
PLAION describes several different symptoms: the Xbox/PlayStation pad is not recognized, Xbox prompts appear for a PlayStation controller, or haptics/lighting remain unavailable. These are not interchangeable with a pad that disconnects in every Windows app.
- Record whether the controller works in Steam's controller test or another game before changing KCD II settings.
- Write down the exact controller (Xbox, DualShock or DualSense), wired/wireless connection and the prompt shown in KCD II.
- Confirm the title was launched from Steam; PLAION's instructions below change Steam settings.
- If input fails outside KCD II too, troubleshoot the cable, battery, pairing or operating-system detection separately first.

Test the documented Steam settings in a reversible order
PLAION points to Steam Input/controller configuration as a common source and gives both an external-controller setting and a per-game setting. Menu names can move between Steam client versions, so use the current Controller and game Properties pages rather than relying on an old screenshot.
| Observed symptom | First controlled check | What this does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation pad shows Xbox prompts | Check PlayStation controller support in Steam's external gamepad settings; compare with PLAION's recommended disabled state | That the physical pad is faulty |
| Xbox pad is not recognized correctly | Check the external Xbox Steam Input option, then the title's per-game Steam Input override | That every Xbox accessory issue is Steam Input |
| Features remain unavailable | Confirm controller type and connection; compare the publisher FAQ's supported controller details | That every DualSense feature works with any wireless/USB/Steam setup |
| Controller fails in other apps too | Pause KCD II-specific changes and verify OS detection/cable/pairing | That reinstalling the game would repair the controller |
Apply one change, restart, and keep a rollback note
Avoid toggling global Steam support, per-game Steam Input, controller profiles and in-game mappings together. If behavior worsens, restore the setting you just changed and return to the last known state.
- Take a note or screenshot of the present global and per-game settings.
- Change only the relevant global support option described by PLAION; relaunch the game and check recognition/prompts.
- If the problem remains, restore or retain the recorded state, then separately test the KCD II Properties → Controller override set to Disable Steam Input, as PLAION documents.
- After each single change, exit and relaunch the game and repeat the same menu/game input check.
- If neither controlled test resolves it, report the controller model, Steam client version, game build, connection and exact symptom to PLAION; do not attach account credentials.

- Community reports are treated as clues, not proof.
Frequently asked questions
Should I turn every Steam controller option off?
No. Follow the matching PLAION controller path and change one setting at a time so you can reverse the change.
Does this fix a controller that is not detected anywhere?
Not necessarily. The cited article addresses Steam Input/configuration symptoms; verify operating-system and connection detection first.
Can I use these steps on PlayStation 5?
No. The article concerns Steam PC; the PS5 has its own controller and crash-support route.
