Read the mismatch as a version-safety warning
The cited forum case describes a save last written by a newer KSP build failing in an older build; it also warns that manually changing version text is risky, especially across major versions where parts or systems can differ. This is a diagnostic possibility, not proof every incompatible-save message has the same cause.
| Observation | Safer next step | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Save last opened in a newer build | Back up and launch a duplicate with that build/branch if available | Opening the only copy in a still older version |
| Recently changed Steam beta branch | Record selected branch and current build, then restore the branch matching the save | Cycling branches while cloud sync is writing |
| Save uses mods or missing parts | Record mod list and seek matching modded-support advice | Calling a modded save stock-compatible |
| Considering version-header edit | Do not edit the original; ask support/community with exact versions | Assuming header change recreates missing parts |

Preserve rollback options
A version change may affect the craft parts and systems present in a save. Keep the original untouched and make a separate test copy before changing Steam betas, mods or version metadata.
- Close KSP and copy the entire affected save folder to a safe location; keep the copy outside the active save directory.
- Record the build shown in-game and the last build/branch that successfully opened the save.
- Write down recent mod changes and do not remove dependencies from the only copy.
- If using Steam, compare the currently selected beta branch with the last-known-good branch before launching the backup copy.
- If the backup still fails, collect build, OS, mod list, exact error and relevant logs for the KSP support forum.
- Do not edit the save version field or overwrite backups based solely on an anecdotal workaround.

Frequently asked questions
Can a newer save always open in an older KSP build?
No. The cited community thread describes version incompatibility and cautions that backward changes can lose parts/systems.
Should I edit the version field?
Not on the original. The source explicitly warns this can be risky; back up and seek build-specific support first.
Does this restore a save automatically?
No. The worksheet only records your version history; it does not access or modify files.

Community support thread explains why a save last written by a newer build may not open safely in an older build and warns that editing version metadata is risky. This is not a universal guarantee; back up first and test only a duplicate.
