Jagged Alliance 3 rule-combination worksheet

Mark only the optional rules you intend to enable, then turn that choice into a pre-campaign checklist.

0 optional rules selected

No optional rule selected. The 1.5 notes describe these as configurable choices, not mandatory campaign rules.

This worksheet does not estimate difficulty, mercenary survival, ammunition use, or campaign success. Rule names and behavior are tied to the developer's Patch 1.5 description; verify the options in your installed build. Entries remain in this tab and are not uploaded.

Select a pressure, not a generic difficulty label

Patch 1.5 adds ten optional rules. Its announcement gives examples with named effects, so a useful setup begins by identifying the part of the campaign you want to change. A larger enemy squad, slower merc leveling and ammunition scarcity create different planning burdens; a salary discount affects a different decision. The announcement does not publish a universal difficulty score or promise that one combination is fair for every roster.

If you want to change…Named optional ruleBefore you enable it
Enemy force sizeBody CountAsk whether you want larger opposing squads, not simply 'harder combat'
Merc progression paceHard LessonsPlan around slower leveling; do not assume a fixed number of extra missions
Ammunition pressureAmmo ScarcityDecide whether tracking and resupply are part of the challenge you want
Elite/legendary starting salariesA.I.M. Legendary DealsCompare the displayed starting salary in your installed build before budgeting
No extra pressureLeave optional rules offThe base campaign remains the comparison point

A practical first-campaign decision sequence

The point of a ruleset is to make a deliberate trade-off. Keep the initial run interpretable: choose one difficulty dimension, play far enough to understand its burden, and only then combine additional rules. This is an editorial planning method, not a developer-prescribed difficulty recipe.

  1. Open the campaign's optional-rules screen and note which rules are available in your current build.
  2. Pick one rule whose named effect matches the challenge you want; write down the expected planning change in plain language.
  3. If adding a second rule, choose a different dimension rather than stacking two pressures you cannot yet distinguish.
  4. Before committing the campaign, review the complete selected list and confirm whether each rule is actually switched on.
  5. After a few operations, compare your observed resource/roster friction with your stated goal. Treat that as your own play observation, not as a general balance finding.

Worked setup example

Suppose the goal is to make tactical ammunition management tighter while leaving leveling pace unchanged. Select Ammo Scarcity only; leave Hard Lessons off. If later you want slower progression too, add it in a separate run or note that the effects are now combined. The example shows how to isolate intent; it does not predict ammunition consumption or mission success.

SetupWhat it changes according to the announcementWhat this guide cannot predict
Ammo Scarcity onlyAmmunition becomes scarcerHow many rounds a specific squad will need
Ammo Scarcity + Hard LessonsAmmo pressure plus longer time to levelWhether the combined challenge is balanced for your roster
No optional rulesNo Patch 1.5 optional-rule modifier selectedWhether your chosen base difficulty is easy or hard for you

Limits and player discussion

Patch 1.5's announcement is the version-bounded source for the examples above; later balance patches or mods may alter availability or effects. Use the current in-game screen as the authority for your run. The linked Steam forum is player-generated UGC, not verified balance data; do not treat an anecdotal ruleset report as a guarantee.

Before you play

  • I wrote down the campaign pressure I actually want.
  • I selected rules by their named effect, not a claimed universal difficulty score.
  • I checked the complete rules list in my installed build.
  • I separated my own campaign experience from a general claim.

Frequently asked questions

Does Body Count guarantee a certain enemy count?

The cited announcement says it confronts mercs with larger enemy squads, but does not state a universal count. Use the current game screen and your mission's actual opposition.

Should a new player enable all optional rules?

Not by default. Combining rules is allowed, but the sources do not certify any combination as balanced for every player. Start from the specific pressure you want.

Is A.I.M. Legendary Deals a combat buff?

The announcement describes reduced starting salaries for elite and legendary mercs. It does not describe a combat-stat bonus.
