Confirm the exact case and platform first
This sequence is for the launch failure described by Arrowhead after the switch to EAC, on Windows through Steam. It is not a general recipe for every crash, a console workflow or proof that anti-cheat is the cause.
The support article warns that removing a mod manager may leave its files behind, and explicitly includes ReShade and OptiScaler. Do not start by deleting arbitrary folders or disabling system security.
| If your situation is… | Use this route | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Windows/Steam crashes at launch after the EAC change | Follow the first-pass list below in order | That every crash after an update is EAC-related |
| Xbox or PlayStation launch problem | Use platform-specific support and platform updates | That Steam folders or utilities exist on console |
| Xbox client returns to ship after joining a PC host | Check the current Known Issues entry and exact host/client direction | That the Windows EAC steps solve a separate matchmaking issue |

Arrowhead's first pass, with a local-settings precaution
The listed AppData cleanup may reset local configuration. If you want to retain those settings, copy the Helldivers2 folder somewhere outside AppData before following Arrowhead's instruction to clear its contents. This optional precaution is an editorial safety note; it is not a claim that the support article provides a recovery guarantee.
- If HELLDIVERS 2 mods were ever installed, purge them and inspect the game bin folder for the exact leftover DLL filenames Arrowhead names, including ReShade/OptiScaler files. Do not remove unrelated files.
- Open %appdata%\Arrowhead\ and clear the Helldivers2 folder as Arrowhead directs; keep a separate copy first if you may want local settings back.
- From Steam's game local files, open EasyAntiCheat and run GGuninst.exe. Remove the named GameGuard folder only if the support article's condition applies.
- Install pending Windows and driver updates. Choose Windows Restart rather than Shut down, as the support article specifies.
- After restart, in Steam open Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files and wait for completion.
- Try a single launch. If it still fails, record the result and move to the separate second pass; do not loop destructive cleanup without evidence.

Second pass is conditional, not the starting point
Only after the first pass fails, Arrowhead asks players to delete the game's bin and data folders and run Steam file verification again. Those are installed-game folders and Steam will reacquire files; do not substitute a whole-library wipe, delete your account data or assume this instruction applies outside Steam.
Arrowhead also says some players report success by launching Steam as administrator. The source presents this as something heard from users, not a guaranteed or universal fix.
- Open Steam → HELLDIVERS 2 → Manage → Browse local files.
- Delete only the named bin and data folders if you have reached this second pass and are comfortable with the reinstall/re-download involved.
- Return to Steam → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity; allow it to finish before another launch attempt.
- If the crash handler requests a memory dump and the problem persists, contact Arrowhead Player Support and attach the requested dump through its ticket workflow.

Use the checklist as a record, not as an automated repair
The browser-local checklist below uses two selected answers to display the published order. It does not inspect files, remove mods, touch AppData, run Steam, update drivers, create a dump, contact support or store your selections after reload.

Before you play
- Confirmed this is Windows/Steam and the EAC-switch launch scenario.
- Checked for leftover mod, ReShade or OptiScaler files before game-folder cleanup.
- Preserved local settings if I want them before clearing the named AppData folder.
- Restarted Windows, then verified files through Steam before the second pass.
- Used only the named bin/data folders on the conditional second pass.
Frequently asked questions
Should I start by deleting bin and data?
No. Arrowhead lists those after its first-pass sequence fails. Start with the earlier steps and preserve local configuration before clearing AppData.
Does this procedure fix Xbox or PS5?
No. The cited paths and Steam file-integrity steps are Windows/Steam-specific.
Does unlinking Steam and PSN restore progression?
No. Arrowhead's separate FAQ says linking Steam and PSN does not copy game data between PC and PS5.
When do I contact support?
If the game still fails after the documented steps and the crash handler requests a memory dump, Arrowhead asks you to attach it to a Player Support ticket.
